U.S. Route 281 Alternate (Texas)
Alternate U.S. Highway 281 (Alt. US 281) is a spur of the U.S. Highway System. The highway serves the small communities of Whitsett and Campbellton, about southeast of San Antonio in the state of Texas. Route description Alt. US 281 begins at an interchange with Interstate 37/ US 281 (I-37/US 281) about southeast of Whitsett; the same interchange also provides access to Farm to Market Road 2049 (FM 2049). The highway enters the town and crosses FM 99 before leaving. Just north of Whitsett, the highway turns from a northwesterly direction to a more northward one. The highway passes by many farms before entering Atascosa County. After the intersection with FM 1099, the highway enters Campbellton. Alt. Whitsett, Texas
Founded in 1835 by John Houlihan through a Spanish land grant, Whitsett is an unincorporated community in northwestern Live Oak County, Texas, United States. It lies at the intersection of U.S. Route 281 and FM 99, along the Union Pacific Railroad and fifteen miles north of Three Rivers. Whitsett is best known as being the setting for the 2008 horror film ''The Wild Man of the Navidad''. From the 1960s through the 1990s, Whitsett was known for excessive poaching due to a high poverty level. Many families lived off game from nearby private ranches. Interstate 37 (I-37) is a Interstate Highway located within the southern portion of the US state of Texas. The highway was first designated in 1959 as a route between Corpus Christi and San Antonio. Construction in the urban areas of Corpus Christi and San Antonio began in the 1960s, and the segments of the Interstate Highway in rural areas were completed by the 1980s. Prior to I-37, the route between Corpus Christi and San Antonio was served by a combination of State Highway 9 (SH 9) from Corpus Christi to Three Rivers and U.S. Highway 281 (US 281) from Three Rivers to San Antonio. Campbellton, Texas
Campbellton is an unincorporated community in Atascosa County, Texas, United States. According to the ''Handbook of Texas'', the community had an estimated population of 350 in 2000. Campbellton is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. History An Irish immigrant, John F. Campbell, began the community in the 1860s by promoting settlement in the area. He was the first postmaster in the community when the post office was established in the 1870s. He also opened a general store in the community and held Catholic church services in his home. The population was 25 in 1894 but then grew to 30 in 1890. It had three churches, a gin, two livestock breeders, and a lumberyard during that same time. The community's population went down during the middle of the decade, but it gained a general store and another livestock breeder.
