U.S. Route 129 (US 129) in Florida is a north–south United States Highway. It runs from Chiefland north to the Georgia State Line in Levy, Gilchrist, Suwannee, and Hamilton Counties. The secret designation for US 129 in Florida, between Chiefland and Hildreth is SR 49 (SR 49). Between Hildreth and Branford, it follows SR 20, between Branford and Live Oak, it follows SR 249, between Live Oak and Jasper, it follows SR 51, between Hillcoat and Jasper, it follows SR 25, and between Hillcoat and the Georgia border, it follows SR 100. The only signed concurrencies that exist are with US 27 between Hildreth and Branford, with US 41 between Hillcoat and Jasper, and with SR 6 in Jasper. Chiefland, Florida
Chiefland is a city in Levy County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,316 at the 2020 census. Chiefland calls itself the "Gem of the Suwannee Valley" and was incorporated in 1929. History A village of the Timucua people was once located south of the present city and at Manatee Springs. The area's economy is traditionally based on agriculture, primarily farming (peanuts, watermelons, hay); ranching (cattle, hogs); dairy (milk); timber ( pulpwood, lumber, turpentine) and aquaculture (fishing, oystering, crabbing). In July 1927, a Black man named Albert Williams was murdered by a mob. He had allegedly assaulted a white turpentine operator over a debt he owed the white man, and "was shot to death by a mob". Bell, Florida
Bell is a town in Gilchrist County, Florida, United States. The population was 456 at the 2010 census, up from 349 in 2000. It is situated in the northern part of the county. The middle/high school is home to approximately 750 students. History The town was founded in the 1890s, named after a beauty contest winner, Bell Fletcher. In the early 1900s, a railway was built, passing through the town on its route between Starke and Wannee. A train depot was built ''circa'' 1905, and the restored depot building is now the Town Hall. On September 18, 2014, a 51-year-old ex-convict, Don Charles Spirit, shot and murdered his daughter Sarah and her six children. State Road 26 (SR 26) is a east–west route across North Central Florida. Route description The western terminus of SR 26 is at US 19/ 98/ 27 Alternate (unsigned SR 55) in Fanning Springs, near the Gilchrist/Levy county line. The route proceeds east through Trenton where it is named West Wade Street and East Wade Street, then into Alachua County and Newberry as West Newberry Road, where it briefly runs through the city's historic district. After running through the historic district, it intersects with US 27- 41 (unsigned SR 45), and continues to maintain the same street name even as it passes through the communities of Jonesville and Tioga before encountering the interchange with Interstate 75 just west of Gainesville. The Gilchrist County Courthouse is an historic two-story red brick courthouse building located at 112 South Main Street in Trenton, Gilchrist County, Florida.
