U-505
''U-505'' is a German Type IXC submarine built for Germany's ''Kriegsmarine'' during World War II. She was captured by the U.S. Navy on 4 June 1944. In her uniquely unlucky career with the ''Kriegsmarine'', she had the distinction of being the "most heavily damaged U-boat to successfully return to port" in World War II on her fourth patrol, and the only submarine in which a commanding officer took his own life in combat conditions on her tenth patrol, following six botched patrols. She was captured on 4 June 1944 by United States Navy Task Group 22.3 (TG 22.3), one of six U-boats that were captured by Allied forces during World War II. All but one of ''U-505''s crew were rescued by the Navy task group. Peter Zschech (1 October 1918 – 24 October 1943) was the second commander of the . He earned notoriety as the first commanding officer to commit suicide while in active command of a naval vessel, as well as the only submariner to ever do so while underwater. History with ''U-505'' ''U-505''s first and very successful commander was ''Kapitänleutnant'' Axel Löwe, who was relieved for illness in October 1942. The 2nd U-boat Flotilla (German ''2. Unterseebootsflottille''), also known as the Saltzwedel Flotilla, was the second operational U-boat unit in Nazi Germany's ''Kriegsmarine''. Founded on 1 September 1936 under the command of ''Fregattenkapitän'' Werner Scheer, it was named in honour of ''Oberleutnant zur See'' Reinhold Saltzwedel. The draft or draught of a ship's hull is the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel). The draught of the vessel is the maximum depth of any part of the vessel, including appendages such as rudders, propellers and drop keels if deployed.
