U. Krishna Rao
Udupi Krishna Rau (1900 – 3 August 1961) was a medical practitioner and politician of the Indian National Congress. He served as mayor of Madras city and as State minister. Early life Born in 1900 in Madras, Krishna Rau was the son of U. Rama Rau. He studied medicine and started practising in 1924. Political career Krishna Rau joined the Indian National Congress and was elected to the Madras Corporation in 1930. He served as member of the corporation from 1930 to 1948 serving as chairman of the Health, Taxation and Finance Committee. In 1947, he was nominated mayor of Madras and served from 1947 to 1948. Krishna Rau served as Member of the Legislative Assembly of Madras state (representing the Harbour constituency during 1952-61). Madras State
Madras State was a state of India during the mid-20th century. At the time of its formation in 1950, it included the whole of present-day Tamil Nadu (except Kanyakumari district), Coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema, the Malabar region of North and central Kerala, Bellary, South Canara and Kollegal. Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema were separated to form Andhra State in 1953, while South Canara and Bellary districts along with the Kollegalam taluka of Coimbatore district were merged with Mysore State, and Malabar District with the State of Travancore-Cochin to form Kerala in 1956. It was established in 1928 as the All India Medical Association, and was renamed the Indian Medical Association in 1930. It is a society registered under The Societies Act of India. Tamil Nadu Legislative Council was the upper house of the former bicameral legislature of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It began its existence as Madras Legislative Council, the first provincial legislature for Madras Presidency.
