Turkish Women Painters
The first Turkish painters appeared no earlier than the mid-19th century during the Ottoman Empire era. (However, there were a few miniaturists before the 19th century.) The first art academy in Turkey was established in the 19th century but was meant only for male art students. Therefore, art remained gender-segregated until 1914, when an art school for women was established, but still, they could work under strict rules since working on nude models of the opposite sex was prohibited. The daughters of the enlightened people in Turkish society were allowed to participate in art privately, and they could not make it a career. Therefore, coming from such families, a girl child could get support from the family but only to practice art as a hobby and not as a profession. The portrayal of female artists in Turkey initially did not intend to show them as skilled people as their male counterparts could have been portrayed. Hale Asaf
Hale Asaf, originally Hale Saliha (1905, Istanbul - 31 May 1938, Paris) was a Turkish painter of Georgian, Abkhazan and Circassian ancestry. She was the niece of Turkey's first female artist, Mihri Müşfik Hanım. Unlike many Turkish artists of her time who were inspired by Impressionism and classical art movements, she was an important proponent of Cubism in Turkey, an influence especially obvious in her self-portraits, portraits and still-life paintings. Hülya Vurnal İkizgül
Hülya Vurnal İkizgül (born 1967 in Istanbul, Turkey), is a Turkish women in fine arts, Turkish mosaicist, sculptor and ceramic artist. Following her graduation from the Faculty of Arts at the Marmara University in 1990, she made her master's degree in the same faculty. She worked in the Workshop of Mural under the direction of renowned painter Mustafa Pilevneli. She prepared her thesis on artists Eren Eyüboğlu and Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, titled ''The Art of Mosaic and the Mosaics of Bedri Rahmi - Eren Eyüboğlu''. Hatice Kumbaraci Gürsöz (born 1945) is a Turkish painter. Early life and education Hatice Kumbaraci was born in Adana, Turkey. After finishing her primary and secondary education, she attended Istanbul State Fine Arts Academy in 1964. She was taught by Dinçer Erimez, and worked in the Studio of Neşet Günal. Nihal Güres (born 1962 in Ankara) is a Turkish artist and writer. She is also sometimes referred to as Nihal Gürses. Early life and education Nihal Güres was born in 1962 in Ankara. She was educated in literature and language of Latin and Greek variety at the Istanbul University classical languages and filology department. She received her art education from Sabri Berkel and Neşe Aybey. Hatice Güleryüz (born February 18, 1968) is a contemporary Turkish artist. She has worked in video, film, photography, art books and drawing. Nazlı Ecevit
Fatma Nazlı Ecevit (4 January 1900 – 14 August 1985) was a Turkish school teacher and a realist-impressionist painter. She was the mother of Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit. Nevin Çokay
Nevin Çokay (born 1930-July 24, 2012) was a Turkish painter and high school teacher of art and history of art. Life Çokay was born in Istanbul, and spent her childhood in different regions of Turkey. In 1947, she started to attend to the studio of Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu at the Academy of Fine Arts Istanbul, where she finished in 1953. She also joined The Group Ten. Her first exhibition took place in the Gallery "Maya" in Istanbul in 1953. Between 1950 and 1953 she was a member of the State Choir for Turkish folk music under the direction of Nedim Otyam. Sevgi Çağal, born on February 17, 1957, in New York City, U.S. is a Turkish painter and sculptor. Sevgi was educated in French linguistics at the New York University from 1974 to 1978, from where she received a BA degree. In 1976, Çağal studied history of arts in Paris, France. She completed her education with a MA degree in French linguistics and literature at NYU in 1980. She moved to Turkey in 1987, and lives since then in İstanbul.
