The airport parallels the coastline, roughly inland from the shore. Numerous houses and hotels use the runway for access to the city. Trujillo, Honduras
Trujillo is a city, with a population of 20,780 (2020 calculation), and a municipality on the northern Caribbean coast of the Honduran department of Colón, of which the city is the capital. The municipality had a population of about 30,000 (2003). The city is located on a bluff overlooking the Bay of Trujillo. Behind the city rise two prominent mountains, Mount Capiro and Mount Calentura. Three Garifuna fishing villages—Santa Fe, San Antonio, and Guadelupe—are located along the beach. Trujillo has received plenty of attention as the potential site of a proposed Honduran charter city project, according to an idea originally advocated by American economist Paul Romer. Colón Department (Honduras)
Colón is one of the 18 departments into which Honduras is divided. It was created in 1881. The departmental capital is Trujillo, and the other main city is Tocoa. Trujillo was the site of the first Catholic Mass on the American mainland, held when Christopher Columbus reached the Honduran shore in 1502. Colon harbors a substantial Garifuna population and has pristine beaches and rainforested national parks. The Fort of Santa Barbara, built by the Spaniards in the colonial era, was the site of the execution of US filibuster William Walker in Trujillo, and his remains are buried in the city's graveyard. Honduras
Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is a country in Central America. Puerto Lempira Airport is an airport serving Puerto Lempira in Gracias a Dios Department, Honduras. It handles regional air traffic for the city. It is also a hub for general aviation and the Honduran Air Force. The airport is within Puerto Lempira, the capital city of the Gracias a Dios Department. It is the principal transportation link to the rest of Honduras, as there are no paved highways leading to the city. The airport and city are on the shore of the Caratasca Lagoon, which provides the town's main economy. The airport and the township suffered substantial damage in 1998, after Hurricane Mitch made landfall in the general area.
