TrowelBlazers
TrowelBlazers is a project aimed at increasing the representation of women in the fields of archaeology, geology and palaeontology. The project is run by Brenna Hassett, Victoria Herridge, Suzanne Pilaar Birch and Rebecca Wragg Sykes. Blog TrowelBlazers began as a blog dedicated to women archaeologists, palaeontologists and geologists. As of 2019 thwebsitehosted over 200 biographies. The project originated in a conversation on Twitter, and is noted for utilising a range of digital technologies, including crowdfunding, blogging, digital and print media. Fossil Hunter Lottie The TrowelBlazers team co-designed Fossil Hunter Lottie, a palaeontologist doll. Raising Horizons exhibition An exhibition of photographs, entitled ''Raising Horizons'', taken by Leonora Saunders showcased the diversity of archaeology and geoscience. Lucy Allen Smart
Lucy Allen Smart (née Lucy Allen, 1877–1960) was an American librarian and curator. Work at Ohio State Allen began her studies to become a librarian at Ohio State University in 1894. While there she assisted Warren K. Moorehead, professor of archaeology at Ohio State and the curator of the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society's museum, in compiling a catalogue and map of archaeological sites in the state. Moorehead was forced to resign his post in 1897 when he contracted tuberculosis. He recommended that Allen finish the catalogue, saying that she knew the material "better than any other person – next to myself". She also took over his role as curator for a five-month period in 1898. Her successor, William Corless Mills, revised and expanded Moorehead and Allen's map and published it as the landmark ''Archaeological Atlas of Ohio'', the first comprehensive state archaeological survey produced in the United States. Rebecca Wragg Sykes
Rebecca Wragg Sykes is a British Paleolithic Archaeology, archaeologist, broadcaster, popular science writer and author who lives in Wales. She is interested in the Middle Paleolithic, Middle Palaeolithic, specifically in the lives of Neanderthals; and she is one of the founders of TrowelBlazers, a website set up to celebrate the lives of women in archaeology, Paleontology, palaeontology and geology. Career Wragg Sykes studied as an undergraduate at the University of Bristol, before gaining her BA in Archaeology in 2003, and MA in the Archaeology of Human Origins from the University of Southampton in 2004. Her doctoral thesis from the University of Sheffield, which examined evidence for late Neanderthals in Britain, was awarded in 2010. Brenna Hassett
Brenna R. Hassett is an American British bioarchaeologist at University College London (UCL), author, public speaker and one of the founders of TrowelBlazers, which celebrates women archaeologists, paleontologists and geologists. Early life and education Hassett was born in California, USA and attended Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach, California. She holds a BA in anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles and an MA in archaeology from University College London in the United Kingdom. She was awarded a PhD in dental anthropology from UCL in 2011, supported by a Wenner Gren Foundation Research Scholarship. Elizabeth Baldwin Garland
Elizabeth (Betsy) Baldwin Garland was an American archaeologist known for her expertise on Great Lakes prehistory and the archaeology of Michigan. She was the author of a number of scholarly publications. Biography Garland earned a BS in geology from Wellesley College, an MA in Anthropology from Radcliffe College, and a PhD from Harvard in anthropology in 1967. In 1964, Garland was offered a teaching position in the anthropology department at Western Michigan University (WMU). She was the first archaeologist on the faculty at WMU. In 1966, Garland helped create WMU's archaeology program in the department of anthropology, as well as a joint field school with Michigan State University. Garland led numerous excavations in Michigan, including several surveys of the Kalamazoo River basin. Lottie Dolls
Lottie Dolls are a series of dolls created by Arklu Ltd. Launched in August 2012. Lottie promotes STEM subjects for kids and was even the first doll in space when she travelled to the International Space Station alongside British European Space Agency Astronaut, Tim Peake, on the Principia Mission, in December 2015. History Arklu co-founders, Ian Harkin and Lucie Follett, based in London at the time, noticed a niche in the market, with parents concerned about the over-sexualization of dolls currently available in the market. They began 18-months of research, alongside British academics, resulting in Lottie; a doll based on the proportions of an average 9-year-old girl (with the exception of her head, which is larger to allow more hairstyling play). Lady Mary Bailey
Mary, Lady Bailey, (née Westenra; 1 December 1890 – 29 July 1960) was an Anglo-Irish aviator. She was known as one of the finest aviatrices of her time, who '"personally guided a plane from England to the nether tip of South Africa and back" (''Time'', 28 January 1930). Early life The daughter of Derrick Warner William Westenra, 5th Baron Rossmore, of Rossmore Castle, County Monaghan and his wife, Mittie (née Naylor). Lady Bailey spent most of her childhood in Ireland where she was home schooled until she ran away in 1906. Adventurous from a young age, she apparently bought a motorbike in her youth and was gaining a reputation for speeding in cars by 1914. Florence Bascom
Florence Bascom (July 14, 1862 – June 18, 1945) was an American pioneer for women as a geologist and educator. Bascom became an anomaly in the 19th century when she earned two bachelor's degrees. Earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1882, and a Bachelor of Science in 1884 both at the University of Wisconsin. Shortly after, in 1887, Bascom earned her master's degree in geology at the University of Wisconsin. Bascom was the second woman to earn her PhD in geology in the United States, in 1893. Receiving her PhD from Johns Hopkins University, this made her the first woman to earn a degree at the institution. After earning her doctorate in geology, in 1896 Bascom became the first woman to work for the United States Geological Survey as well as being one of the first women to earn a master's degree in geology. Victoria Herridge
Victoria Louise "Tori" Herridge, born 1980, is a palaeontologist at the Natural History Museum in London and one of the founders of TrowelBlazers, which celebrates women archaeologists, palaeontologists and geologists. Career Herridge graduated with a first class degree in biology from University College London in 2002. After a master's degree at Imperial College London, she returned to University College London to gain a doctorate with a thesis titled "Dwarf Elephants on Mediterranean Islands: A Natural Experiment in Parallel Evolution". Her research addressed evolution of island mammals during the Pleistocene period and their responses to extreme climate change. She is a founding editor-in-chief at the open access journal '' Open Quaternary''. Zonia Baber
Mary Arizona "Zonia" Baber (August 24, 1862 – January 10, 1956), was an American geographer and geologist best known for developing methods for teaching geography. Her teachings emphasized experiential learning through field work and experimentation. Education and teaching career As Baber's hometown of Dudley, just east of Kansas, IL, did not offer education beyond elementary school, she moved 10 miles to Paris, Illinois to attend high school where she lived with her uncle. After high school, she attended "Normal school" to train as a teacher. Baber started her career as a private school principal from 1886–1888. She then took a job teaching at Cook County Normal School (now split into Chicago State University and Northeastern Illinois University), where she served as the head of the Geography Department from 1890 to 1899. Ella Al-Shamahi
Ella Al-Shamahi ( ar, آلاء الشماحي) is an explorer, paleoanthropologist, evolutionary biologist, writer and stand-up comic. She specialises in the study of Neanderthals. She is also the presenter and producer of BBC2's ''Neanderthals: Meet Your Ancestors.'' She is a Trustee of the International Association for the Study of Arabia. Early life and career Al-Shamahi grew up in Birmingham, United Kingdom and has Yemeni and Syrian ancestry. Elizabeth Anderson Gray
Elizabeth Gray (born Elizabeth Anderson; 21 February 1831 – 11 February 1924) was a Scottish early fossil collector. Gray created scientifically organised collections of fossils for several museums. Life Elizabeth Anderson was born in Alloway in 1831. She and her family moved to Enoch near Girvan in Ayrshire where they farmed and Elizabeth attended a small private school. Her father was described as an enthusiastic collector of fossils who had a type of trilobite named after him. Anderson was sent to a boarding school in Glasgow when she was fifteen. Mary Anning
Mary Anning (21 May 1799 – 9 March 1847) was an English fossil collector, dealer, and palaeontologist who became known around the world for the discoveries she made in Jurassic marine fossil beds in the cliffs along the English Channel at Lyme Regis in the county of Dorset in Southwest England. Anning's findings contributed to changes in scientific thinking about prehistoric life and the history of the Earth. Anning searched for fossils in the area's Blue Lias and Charmouth Mudstone cliffs, particularly during the winter months when landslides exposed new fossils that had to be collected quickly before they were lost to the sea.
