Rugby Sevens At The Commonwealth Games
Rugby sevens has been played at every Commonwealth Games since its first appearance at the 1998 edition held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Rugby sevens was an optional sport that was included for 2002 and 2006; it was then made a 'Core' sport by the Commonwealth Games Federation, necessitating its appearance at all future games from the 2010 Games onward. New Zealand dominated the men's tournament at its inception until 2014 when they lost for the first time at the Games, playing South Africa in the gold medal match. 2022 marked the first time that New Zealand failed to reach the gold medal match in either the men's or women's tournaments. Until the 2014 Games, rugby sevens was a male-only sport at the Commonwealth Games, but a female tournament was added to the programme for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. 2014 Hong Kong Sevens
The 2014 Hong Kong Sevens was the 39th edition of the Hong Kong Sevens and the seventh tournament of the 2013–2014 Sevens World Series. It took place at its long-time home, Hong Kong Stadium. The Cup title was claimed by New Zealand, with South Africa, Scotland and Kenya respectively claiming the lower-level Plate, Bowl and Shield. Japan won the World Series Core Team Qualifier to earn promotion to "core" status for the 2014–15 series. Format The teams were drawn into four pools of four teams each. Each team played all others in their pool once. The top two teams from each pool advanced to the Cup/Plate brackets. The bottom two teams from each group entered the Bowl/Shield brackets. The Trinidad and Tobago national rugby union team has thus far not qualified for the Rugby World Cup, but has participated in qualifying tournaments since 1999. They are classed as a tier-three nation by World Rugby. The national side is ranked 52nd in the world (as of 29 July 2019). History Trinidad and Tobago played their first ever rugby international in 1979 in Georgetown against Bermuda. Trinidad and Tobago lost the contest 8 points to 42. The Trinidad and Tobago Rugby Football Union (TTRFU) is the governing body for rugby union in Trinidad and Tobago. It was founded in 1928 and became affiliated to the International Rugby Board in 1992. It is also a member of the West Indies Rugby Union, the Trinidad & Tobago Olympic Committee and the North American and West Indian Rugby Association. In May 2021, Maria Thomas was elected as the first female president of the TTRFU, defeating the incumbent Colin Peters. The Trinidad and Tobago women's national rugby union team is a national sporting side that represents Trinidad and Tobago in Women's rugby union. They played their first test match in 2003 and compete annually in the Rugby Americas North Women's Rugby Championship. History Trinidad and Tobago competed in the inaugural NAWIRA Women's Rugby Championship in 2003, they hosted Jamaica in Port of Spain in a two-test series and were victorious in both games. Between 2016 and 2019 they competed in a ten-a-side version of the game as they tried to build-up the game in the region. The competition was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. 2022 saw the teams increase up to twelve players and the region had its first 12-a-side tournament. In 2023, Trinidad and Tobago sent their fifteens team after almost twelve years. They finished as runners-up after losing to USA South in the final.
