The history of Trinidad and Tobago begins with the settlements of the islands by Indigenous First Peoples. Rodney Wilkes
Rodney Adolphus Wilkes (11 March 1925 – 24 March 2014) was a weightlifter from Trinidad and Tobago. Nicknamed "The Mighty Midget" he remained relatively unknown outside of local competition until he won the gold medal at the 1946 Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia. His performance included record lifts of in the press, in the snatch and in the clean and jerk. He was selected to represent his country at the 1948 Olympics in London where he competed in the featherweight division. At those Games he became the first athlete from Trinidad and Tobago to win an Olympic medal by taking the silver, behind Egyptian Mahmoud Fayad.
