Toyang
"Toyang" is a song by Filipino rock band Eraserheads, from their debut album ''UltraElectroMagneticPop!.'' It is the band's second hit single. The song is notable for featuring creative wordplay and idiosyncratic combinations: the narrator is speaking of his love for simplicity and for Toyang, a bright-eyed Filipina, through a classic English love song, several Filipino folk songs, and Ilocano language, Ilocano poetry. ''Ultraelectromagneticpop!'' (stylized as ''ultraelectromagneticpop!'') is the debut studio album of the Filipino rock band, Eraserheads. It was released by BMG Records (Pilipinas) Inc. in July 1993. ''Ultraelectromagneticpop!'' spawned hit songs such as "Ligaya", "Toyang", and "Pare Ko". The album is often credited for revitalizing the alternative rock genre in the Philippines during the 1990s. Background Though ''Ultraelectromagneticpop!'' was their debut album, most of the songs were recycled from original compositions that were written since their college days in 1989. Hoping to have their songs published, the band recorded a demo tape in 1991 and shopped around record labels and radio stations, only to be rejected at every turn. "Ligaya" (English: "''Joy''") is the first single by the Eraserheads from their debut album, ''Ultraelectromagneticpop!''. The single was able to make it to the Top Ten of 97.1 WLS-FM countdown. The band last performed the song in their second and final reunion concert dubbed as "The Final Set" on March 7, 2009. No music video was made for the song. Pare Ko (English: "My Pal") is a song by the Eraserheads. It was included in their debut album, ''Ultraelectromagneticpop!''. It was the band's third hit single. The song was later adapted into a movie of the same title starring Claudine Barreto and Mark Anthony Fernandez. It was covered by APO Hiking Society and later Spongecola. Controversy The single and the album was nearly censored by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI) due to the Tagalog profanity ''"‘Tang Ina"'' (Filipino slang whose rough English equivalent is ''son of a bitch'', shortened from 'Putang Ina'). Swear words were unheard of in Philippine music at the time, and as such their record label asked them to record a radio edit of the song; they retitled it "Walang Hiyang Pare Ko", where "Tang Ina" was changed to "'Lang Hiya". Sylvia Dee
Sylvia Dee (born Josephine Moore, October 22, 1914 – June 12, 1967) was an American lyricist and novelist best known for writing the lyrics to " Too Young", a hit for Nat King Cole, " The End of the World", a hit for Skeeter Davis and "Bring Me Sunshine", which was Morecambe & Wise's signature tune. Biography Dee was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and educated at the University of Michigan. She was a copywriter for a newspaper in Rochester, New York, and wrote a number of short stories as well as the Broadway stage scores for "Barefoot Boy With Cheek". Joining ASCAP in 1943, her musical collaborators included Sidney Lippman, Arthur Kent, Elizabeth Evelyn Moore, George Goehring, Al Frisch and Guy Wood. Dee wrote the words to a nonsense song that went to number 1 in 1945 called "Chickery Chick". The music was written by Sidney Lippman and it was played by Sammy Kaye's orchestra. The ''bahay kubo'', also known as ''payag'' (Nipon) in the Visayan languages and, is a type of stilt house indigenous to the Philippines. It often serves as an icon of Philippine culture. Sidney Lippman (March 1, 1914 – March 11, 2003) was a composer and songwriter. He wrote the music for Nat King Cole's 1951 No. 1 hit "Too Young". " Too Young's" words were written by Sylvia Dee, a lyricist and longtime collaborator with Lippman. They got the idea for the song when she told him that her younger brother was getting married and she thought he was too young.
