Toorak Handicap
The Toorak Handicap is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race run as an open handicap race, over a distance of 1,600 metres at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia. Currently, the prizemoney is A$1,000,000. History The race is held annually in October on Caulfield Guineas day, the first day of the MRC Spring Carnival. During World War II the race was run at Flemington Racecourse. The G1 1400 metre Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, held three weeks earlier under the same handicap conditions at Caulfield is considered the predominant lead up race. Thoroughbreds which perform well usually follow up by entering the G1 Cantala Stakes on Victoria Derby day. The Trump (horse)
The Trump was an Australian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double as well as two other principal (Group One) (G1) races in 1937. He showed his versatility by winning races over distances of six furlongs to two miles. Breeding He was a small horse (15 hands 1 inch) by the very good, but temperamental racehorse Manfred who was by the outstanding sire, Valais (GB). His dam Koanie was by the good racehorse Spearhead (GB) who sired 21 stakes-winners. Royal Gem (foaled 1942 in Australia) was a versatile Thoroughbred racehorse that won 23 races ranging from 5 furlongs (1,000 metres) to 12 furlongs (2,400 m). He was later a successful sire in the United States. Galilee (1963−1990) was New Zealand bred Thoroughbred racehorse who became one of the most successful racehorses in Australia.Pring, Peter; "Analysis of Champion Racehorses", The Thoroughbred Press, Sydney, 1977, Galilee was the first and is still the only horse to win the Caulfield, Melbourne and Sydney Cups in one season. Gunsynd (4 October 1967 – 29 April 1983) was a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who won 29 races and A$280,455 in prize money. In his seven starts over one mile (1,600 metres) he was only once defeated, by half-a-head in the Epsom Handicap. Breeding Foaled in 1967, at The Dip Stud, at Breeza, New South Wales, Gunsynd was by the grey racehorse, Sunset Hue (by the imported sire, Star Kingdom), his dam was a twin foal, Woodie Wonder, that ran third at her only start. Woodie Wonder was by the sire, Newtown Wonder (GB). She was the dam of eight foals, six of which raced for three winners. She won four group one (G1) races, the 2006 Emirates Stakes, 2007 Queen of the Turf Stakes, 2007 Toorak Handicap and the 2007 Myer Classic. More Joyous (foaled 20 August 2006) is an Australian trained and New Zealand bred Thoroughbred racemare, trained by Gai Waterhouse, who has won eight Group 1 races. Pedigree More Joyous is by the leading Southern Halo sire More Than Ready, and from the Australian Oaks winning Sunday Silence mare Sunday Joy. Racing career More Joyous made her debut in January 2009 by winning a two-year -ld fillies handicap by five and a half lengths. A month later she was sent out a $1.35 favourite in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes at Rosehill. When the barriers opened the saddle on More Joyous slipped and she began buckjumping for about 100 metres and took no part in the race. Mufhasa (horse)
Mufhasa (foaled 7 September 2004), was a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse who won a number of Group races in New Zealand and Australia in a career stretching from 2007 to 2013. He was known as King Mufhasa in Australia. Mufhasa was trained by Stephen McKee and ridden in the majority of his races by Samantha Spratt. Towards the end of his career he was trained by Bruce Wallace and he was cared for throughout his career by strapper Amy Doran. His win in the 2012 Windsor Park Plate was his tenth and final Group 1 victory. Mufhasa was voted the New Zealand Horse of the Year for the 2009 and 2012 seasons. Mr Quickie (foaled 10 August 2015) is a retired multiple Group 1 winning Australian bred thoroughbred racehorse. Background Mr Quickie was a A$115,000 Magic Millions purchase for Dalziel Racing from the Rosemont Stud draft. Rosemont Stud remained in the ownership and also stand his sire Shamus Award. Racing career Un-raced as a two-year-old, Mr Quickie made his debut on the 25 September 2018 at Murtoa Racecourse, where he finished in second placing. Mr Quickie then proceeded to win 9 of his next 12 starts, which culminated on 8 June 2019 with his first Group One victory at Eagle Farm in the Queensland Derby. He was backed in from $5.50 to start a $2.80 favourite. He defeated Vow And Declare by just under a length who would later go on that year to win the Melbourne Cup.
