Tom Finlay
Thomas P. Finlay (1897 – 6 September 1967) was an Irish hurler who played as a wing-back for the Laois senior team. Regarded as one of Laois's greatest-ever players, Finlay played during the county's most successful period from 1914 to 1915 before later lining out for Dublin. During his inter-county career he won two All-Ireland medals and three Leinster medals. Finlay was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. At club level Finlay won several county club championship medals with Ballygeehan. His brother, Jack Finlay John Finlay (10 June 1889 – 30 September 1942) was an Irish athlete who played hurling for Laois in the 1910s and in later life was a politician. Clough–Ballacolla GAA
Clough–Ballacolla is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in County Laois, Ireland. The colour of the club jersey is all blue with a gold band. History Since its founding in the late 19th century, the club has changed its name a number of times and was previously known as Ballygeehan, St Canice's, Cannonswood, Ballacolla. From 1914 to 1918, hurling was particularly strong the area with the Ballygeehan team winning the Laois Senior Hurling Championship, as well as supplying the bulk of the team in 1915 when Laois won its only All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. Mick Aherne, a member of the Laois senior football and hurling teams of the 1980s, is one of the best known players the club has produced. During the late 1990s and the 2000s Clough–Ballacolla won several titles in U/14, U/16, Minor and U-21. In 2009, Clough–Ballacolla won their first Laois Senior Hurling Championship title in 91 years. Laois Senior Hurling Championship
The Laois Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Laois GAA clubs. The Laois GAA, Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1888. Clough–Ballacolla GAA, Clough–Ballacolla (incl Ballygeehan) are the title holders (2022) defeating Camross GAA, Camross in the Final and completing the club's first three-in-a-row since doing a five-in-a-row in 1918. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the Bob O'Keefe Cup. The winners of the Laois Senior Championship qualify to represent their county in the Leinster Senior Club Hurling Championship. Jack Finlay
John Finlay (10 June 1889 – 30 September 1942) was an Irish athlete who played hurling for Laois in the 1910s and in later life was a politician. Finlay was born in Ballycuddy, County Laois in 1889. He had a love of hurling from a young age and soon joined his local club Ballygeehan. In 1913 Finlay won a Laois Junior Hurling Championship with the club. They moved to senior level the following year and proceeded to win five county championships in-a-row with Finlay as captain. After winning the county title in 1914 the club had a major say in the selection of the inter-county team for the following year. Finlay was chosen as captain and was joined by his brother Tom Finlay. That year Laois defeated Offaly, Kilkenny and Dublin to win the Leinster Championship. The Leinster GAA Hurling Senior Championship, known simply as the Leinster Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Leinster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in the province of Leinster, and has been contested every year since the 1888 championship. The final, usually held on the first Sunday in July, serves as the culmination of a series of games played during May and June, and the results determine which team receives the Bob O'Keeffe Cup. The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Luthchleas Gael Coiste Laois) or Laois GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Laois.
