Thomas Wilson Paterson
Thomas Wilson Paterson (6 December 1850 – 28 August 1921) was a Canadian railway contractor, politician, and the ninth Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Railway career After moving to British Columbia in 1885, he helped to build the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway line on Vancouver Island. In 1895, he became general manager of the Victoria and Sidney Railway. In 1897, Paterson filed for and was granted a patent for a spark catcher and smoke burner for locomotives. The following year, he filed for a patent in the United States as well. Political career In 1902, Paterson ran as an independent candidate in a byelection for the provincial riding of North Victoria prompted by the death of the incumbent, John Paton Booth. He defeated a government-aligned candidate by 43 votes (12% of the votes cast). For the 1903 election, the North Victoria riding was abolished during redistribution, and Thomas ran as a Liberal candidate in the newly created riding of The Islands. He ... Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway
The Island Rail Corridor, previously the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway (E&N Railway), is a railway operation on Vancouver Island and is the only remaining railway on Vancouver Island after the closure of the Englewood Railway in November 2017. The Island Corridor Foundation owns the former Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway corridor. The railway line is in length from Victoria to Courtenay, known as the Victoria Subdivision, with a branch line from Parksville to Port Alberni known as the Port Alberni Subdivision at in length, for a total of mainline track. In 2006, the Island Corridor Foundation acquired the railway's ownership from the Canadian Pacific Railway. George Riley (British Columbia Politician)
George Riley (April 2, 1843 – January 19, 1916) was a Canadians, Canadian merchant and Liberal Party of Canada, Liberal politician. Born in St. Catharines, Ontario, St. Catharines, Canada West, the son of P. Riley, he was educated there and in Buffalo, New York. In 1885, Riley moved to British Columbia, becoming a merchant in Victoria, British Columbia, Victoria. He married Mary N. Balfour in 1908. He was chosen in a 1902 by-election to represent Victoria (British Columbia federal electoral district), Victoria in the House of Commons of Canada, after the election of Edward Gawler Prior was voided. He was re-elected once, serving as an MP for Victoria City (electoral district), Victoria City until 1906, when he resigned to allow William Templeman (politician), William Templeman, a Minister without Portfolio, minister in Wilfrid Laurier's government, to take his seat. New Westminster Royals
The New Westminster Royals was the name of several professional ice hockey teams based in New Westminster, British Columbia, first established in 1911 for the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA). Though nominally based in New Westminster, the team played its home games at the Denman Arena in nearby Vancouver, as an arena was not available; the team would never play a PCHA home game in New Westminster as a result. They won the inaugural PCHA championship in 1912 PCHA season, 1912, though financial difficulties saw the team relocated to Portland, Oregon in 1914 and become the Portland Rosebuds (ice hockey), Portland Rosebuds. Pacific Coast Hockey Association
The Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) was a professional ice hockey league in western Canada and the western United States, which operated from 1911 to 1924 when it then merged with the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL). The PCHA was considered to be a major league of ice hockey and was important in the development of the sport of professional ice hockey through its innovations. The league was started by the Patrick family, professional hockey players from Montreal, building new arenas in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia. After a few years of play, the league was accepted by the Stanley Cup trustees as being of a high enough standard that teams from its league were accepted for Stanley Cup challenges.
