Tom Fitzgerald (economist)
Thomas Michael Fitzgerald (28 August 1918 – 25 January 1993) was an Australian economist, journalist and political advisor. Education Fitzgerald trained in economics by reading Keynes at the University of Sydney (1936–40). Career Fitzgerald enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in November 1942 and, after training, was navigator on ' Liberator' bombers in 1944–45. Fitzgerald was financial editor of ''The Sydney Morning Herald'' from 1952 to 1970. While retaining his employment by Fairfax, he began publishing ''Nation'', a fortnightly journal, in September 1958. Sylvia Lawson was one of his early contributors. He sold ''Nation'' to Gordon Barton in 1972 and was Editorial Director of Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd from 1970 to 1972. Fitzgerald produced the "Fitzgerald Report – The contribution of the mineral industry to Australian welfare : report to the Minister for Minerals and Energy" (1974) for the Whitlam Government. Thomas FitzGerald, 2nd Baron Desmond
Thomas Fitzmaurice FitzGerald, 2nd Baron of Desmond (d. 1298), was the son of Maurice FitzJohn FitzGerald and grandson of John FitzThomas FitzGerald from whom he inherited the title. Thomas succeeded to the barony of Desmond, which lay in Munster, in the southwest of Ireland, in 1282. Thomas's succession followed his long minority (he did not inherit his lands until the age of 21). His father and grandfather died in the Battle of Callann in 1261. Tenants in-chief could not acquire their lands and title without special permission, and most likely a large fine, before the age of 21. Early life FitzGerald was born in Tullamore, Ireland, the son of John FitzGerald and his wife Catherine Naghten, ''née'' Higgins. FitzGerald was educated at St Mary's College, Kingstown, and the Ledwich School of Medicine, Dublin. Career FitzGerald arrived in Melbourne, Australia in July 1858 as a ship's surgeon. After opening a private practice, FitzGerald was elected honorary surgeon to the Melbourne Hospital in 1860 and held that post until 1901. FitzGerald was a consulting surgeon in the Boer War in South Africa in 1900, for which services he was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in Nov 1900. Thomas FitzGerald, Earl of Offaly (12 January 1974 – 9 May 1997), styled The Hon. Thomas FitzGerald before 1976 and as Earl of Offaly between 1976 and 1997, was the only son of Maurice, Marquess of Kildare (now the 9th Duke of Leinster). In May 1997, Lord Offaly was killed in a car accident in Ireland. A fund for dyslexics (the T.O.M. Fund) was established in his memory. Thomas FitzGerald (County Louth Politician)
Thomas FitzGerald (died October/November 1834) was an Irish politician and slave trader. FitzGerald worked as a merchant and became wealthy in the West Indies. The Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery states that he was probably the owner of Richmond Hill in Demerera, and as having been a slave factor in the colony as of 1807. In 1823, FitzGerald returned to Ireland, where he purchased Fane Valley in County Louth. At the 1832 UK general election, he stood in County Louth for the Repeal Association, and won election. He died in 1834, while still in office. FitzGerald had two sons: Thomas Christopher, and Percy Hetherington Fitzgerald Percy Hetherington Fitzgerald (26 April 1830 – 24 November 1925) was an Anglo-Irish author and critic, painter and sculptor. Thomas FitzJames FitzGerald, 7th Earl of Desmond (died 1467/68), called 'Thomas of Drogheda', and also known as the Great Earl, was the son of James FitzGerald, 6th Earl of Desmond and Mary de Burgh. He was Lord Deputy of Ireland under the Lieutenancy of George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence, Duke of Clarence from 1463 to his death, and in 1464 founded the College of Youghal. Thomas FitzGerald, 5th Earl of Desmond (c. 1386– 1420), was the only son of John FitzGerald, 4th Earl of Desmond. Upon John's death in 1399, Thomas succeeded to the earldom of Desmond, which lay in Munster, in the southwest of Ireland.
