Thomas Naghten Fitzgerald

Retrieved 19 May 2010 was an Irish-born Australian surgeon and academic. Early life FitzGerald was born in Tullamore, Ireland, the son of John FitzGerald and his wife Catherine Naghten, ''née'' Higgins. FitzGerald was educated at St Mary's College, Kingstown, and the Ledwich School of Medicine, Dublin. Career FitzGerald arrived in Melbourne, Australia in July 1858 as a ship's surgeon. After opening a private practice, FitzGerald was elected honorary surgeon to the Melbourne Hospital in 1860 and held that post until 1901. FitzGerald was a consulting surgeon in the Boer War in South Africa in 1900, for which services he was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in Nov 1900. The ''Australian Dictionary of Biography'' (ADB or AuDB) is a national co-operative enterprise founded and maintained by the Australian National University (ANU) to produce authoritative biographical articles on eminent people in Australia's history. Initially published in a series of twelve hard-copy volumes between 1966 and 2005, the dictionary has been published online since 2006 by the National Centre of Biography at ANU, which has also published ''Obituaries Australia'' (OA) since 2010. History The ADB project has been operating since 1957. Staff are located at the National Centre of Biography in the History Department of the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University. The title of Knight Bachelor is the basic rank granted to a man who has been knighted by the monarch but not inducted as a member of one of the organised orders of chivalry; it is a part of the British honours system. Melbourne General Cemetery
The Melbourne General Cemetery is a large (43 hectare) necropolis located north of the city of Melbourne in the suburb of Carlton North. The cemetery is notably the resting place of four Prime Ministers of Australia, more than any other necropolis within Australia. Former Prime Minister Harold Holt's headstone is a memorial, as his remains have never been discovered. History The cemetery was established in 1852 and opened on 1 June 1853, and the Old Melbourne Cemetery (on the site of what is now the Queen Victoria Market) was closed the next year. The grounds feature several heritage buildings, many in bluestone, including a couple of chapels and a number of cast iron pavilions. The gatehouses are particularly notable. Young & Jackson
Young and Jackson is a hotel in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, at the corner of Flinders Street and Swanston Street. Established in 1861, it is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. History The site was purchased by John Batman, one of the founders of Melbourne, in 1837 at the fledgling settlement's first Crown land sale. Batman had a home built on the site for his children, which became a schoolhouse in 1839. Warehouses were erected on the site after the schoolhouse was razed in 1853. The Princes Bridge Hotel opened there on 1 July 1861 by John P. Toohey and his brother who later went on to found the Tooheys Beer brand.
