The Record Of The Nine
The record of the nine was a term used in hurling to refer to the nine men who held the record between 1944 and 2009 for winning four consecutive All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship winners' medals. This occurred between 1941 and 1944 when Cork won the championship title every year. Only nine men played in all four finals, hence the record of the nine. These men were Din Joe Buckley, Alan Lotty, Jack Lynch, Willie Murphy, Paddy O'Donovan, Johnny Quirke, Christy Ring, Batt Thornhill and Dr. Jim Young. Their record stood for 65 years in spite of some close calls in the interim. In 1952 Tipperary had won the three previous All-Ireland titles and looked set for a fourth consecutive triumph. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) ( ga, Craobh Shinsir Peile na hÉireann) is the premier competition in Gaelic football. An annual tournament organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), it is contested by the county teams in All-Ireland. The first tournament was held in 1887; it has been held every year since 1889. Each tournament ends with a final, played by the 35th Sunday of the year at Croke Park in Dublin, with the winning team receiving the Sam Maguire Cup. History The first Championship to be held featured club teams who represented their respective counties after their county championship. The 21 a-side final was between Commercials of Limerick and Young Irelands of Louth. Martin Comerford
Martin Timothy Comerford (born 9 November 1978) is an Irish hurler who played as a centre-forward for the Kilkenny senior team. Born in London, at an early age Comerford went to St. John's Boys' National School in Ballybough Street, Kilkenny. Comerford went on to attend St. Kieran's College but was overlooked for the hurling team. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-one when he first linked up with the Kilkenny under-21 team. He joined the senior panel during the 2001 championship. Comerford later became a regular member of the starting fifteen, and won six All-Ireland medals, eight Leinster medals and four National League medals on the field of play. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions. At club level Comerford is a two-time Leinster medallist with O'Loughlin Gaels. Aidan Fogarty
Aidan Fogarty (born 20 July 1982) is an Irish hurler who played as a left corner-forward for the Kilkenny senior team. Born in Urlingford, County Kilkenny, Fogarty first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-one when he first linked up with the Kilkenny intermediate team, before later joining the under-21 side. He joined the senior panel during the 2003 championship. Fogarty quickly became a regular member of the starting fifteen, and won five All-Ireland medals, four Leinster medals and three National League medals on the field of play. Eddie Brennan
Edward Joseph Brennan (born 2 October 1978) is an Irish hurling manager and former player. His league and championship career with the Kilkenny senior team lasted twelve seasons from 2000 until 2011. Brennan was the manager of the Laois senior hurling team from 2019 to 2020. Brennan played competitive hurling in his final year at St Kieran's College, having earlier come to prominence as a dual player at minor levels with the Graigue–Ballycallan club. He won dual championship medals with the minor and under-21 teams, before later joining the club's junior team. Brennan eventually made the break onto the Graigue–Ballycallan senior team and won a Leinster medal in 2000, having earlier won a county senior championship medal. Eoin Larkin
Eoin Larkin (born 17 July 1984) is an Irish hurler and coach. His league and championship career as a forward with the Kilkenny senior team spanned twelve seasons from 2005 to 2016. Born in Kilkenny, Larkin first played competitive hurling following encouragement from his father. He attended St. Kieran's College where he began his college hurling career as goalkeeper at under-14 level. Larkin simultaneously came to prominence with the James Stephens club at juvenile and underage levels, winning two county under-21 championship medals in 2000 and 2002. He subsequently joined the James Stephens senior team and was at centre-forward when the club won the All-Ireland title in 2005. Derek Lyng
Derek Thomas Lyng (born 4 July 1978) is an Irish hurling manager and former player. He has been manager of the Kilkenny senior hurling team since 2022. Playing career Waterford Institute of Technology As a student at the Waterford Institute of Technology, Lyng joined the senior hurling team during his second year but found it difficult to break onto the starting fifteen. On 28 February 1999, he won a Fitzgibbon Cup medal after coming on as a substitute in the 4–15 to 3–12 defeat of University College Cork in the final. Emeralds Lyng joined the Emeralds club in Urlingford at a young age and played in all grades at juvenile and underage levels. Jackie Tyrrell
Jackie Tyrrell (born 19 June 1982) is an Irish hurler whose league and championship career with the Kilkenny senior team spanned fourteen seasons from 2003 to 2016. Born in Kilkenny, Tyrrell was raised in a hurling household. His father, Dermot Tyrrell, had played for the O'Loughlin Gaels club and was an All-Ireland-winner in the minor grade in 1973 before later playing for the county at under-21 level. Henry Shefflin
Henry Shefflin (born 11 January 1979) is an Irish hurling manager and former player who is the current manager of the Galway senior hurling team. In his playing career he was nicknamed "King Henry" because of his directive style, dominance, competitive spirit and leadership on the field.
