The Viking Sagas
''The Viking Sagas'' is a 1995 American film directed by Michael Chapman (cinematographer), Michael Chapman and starring Ralf Möller and Sven-Ole Thorsen. It is heavily inspired by the ''Njáls saga'', through it features an original plot. It was largely shot on Iceland with a mostly Icelandic cast. Plot The story takes place in Iceland around the height of the Viking Age, where a young man, Kjartan (Ralf Möller), must defeat a horde of evil Vikings, intent on taking over his father's land and stealing his girlfriend Guðrún Ósvífrsdóttir, Gudrun (Ingibjörg Stefánsdóttir) from him too. To help him in this task, Kjartan seeks help from the older Viking Warrior Gunnar Hámundarson, Gunnar (Sven-Ole Thorsen), who trains him to become a fierce fighter, and later aids him in his quest against his archenemy Ketil (Hinrik Ólafsson). Michael Chapman (cinematographer)
Michael Crawford Chapman, A.S.C. (November 21, 1935 – September 20, 2020) was an American cinematographer and film director well known for his work on many films of the American New Wave of the 1970s and in the 1980s with directors such as Martin Scorsese and Ivan Reitman. He shot more than forty feature films, over half of those with only three different directors. Early life and education Chapman was born in New York City in 1935, but raised in Wellesley, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, without much of an interest in film. As a youth, he was more interested in sports than photography or painting. After high school, he attended Columbia University, where he majored in English. Upon his graduation, he worked temporarily as a brakeman for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad in the Midwest and then served a brief stint in the United States Army. Guðrún Ósvífsdóttir (Old Norse: ; Modern Icelandic: ; 10th century – 11th century), was an Icelandic woman who was famed for her great wisdom and beauty. She was married four times. She is the main protagonist of the Medieval Icelandic '' Laxdœla saga'', which recounts the history of the People of Laxárdalur. It is widely thought that the saga represents some historical fact. Magnús Ólafsson (born 17 February 1946) is an Icelandic actor, comedian, singer and former handball player. A veteran stage and film actor of several decades, he is best known for his performance of the character ''Bjössi Bolla'' which was created when he was a member of the comedy band Sumargleðin in the early 1980's along with Ragnar Bjarnason, Ómar Ragnarsson, Bessi Bjarnason and Þorgeir Ástvaldsson. With Sumargleðin, he sang the hit song ''Prins Póló'' in 1981. Egill Ólafsson (born 9 February 1953) is an Icelandic singer, songwriter, and actor. He is married to the actress Tinna Gunnlaugsdóttir. Raimund Harmstorf (7 October 1939 – 3 May 1998) was a German actor. He became famous as the protagonist of a German TV mini series based on Jack London's the Sea-Wolf (which was sold into many countries) and starred later on successfully in another German TV series based on Jules Verne's Michael Strogoff. Life Harmstorf was the son of a doctor from Hamburg. He started a sports career and soon became a regional master of the decathlon. He then studied medicine, later music and performing arts. From the beginning of the 1960s he started performing in smaller TV productions. Bjørn Floberg (born 12 September 1947) is a Norwegian actor of film, television and theatre. He is particularly noted for playing unsympathetic authority figures, but he has also had success playing other types of roles. Gunnar Eyjólfsson (24 February 1926 - 21 November 2016) was an Icelandic actor. Gunnar began his career with the Reykjavík Theatre Company in 1945.
