The Substation
The Substation (Chinese: 电力站) is Singapore's first independent contemporary arts centre. It was founded in 1990 by Kuo Pao Kun. The Substation is centrally located in the city's civic district and was the first building under the National Arts Council's "Arts Housing Scheme". It officially opened on 16 September 1990. The Substation is a non-profit organisation and registered Institution of Public Character in Singapore, which relies on financial and in-kind support from the general public, commercial organisations and government ministries to cover the costs of operating and developing arts & educational programmes. The Board is chaired by Chew Kheng Chuan. History The site of The Substation, as its name suggests, was previously a power sub-station. The building dates from 1926. Kuo Pao Kun
Kuo Pao Kun (193910 September 2002) () was a playwright, theatre director, and arts activistKwok, Kian-Woon. "Remembering Kuo Pao Kun (1939–2002)." National Arts Council (Singapore)
The National Arts Council (NAC) is a statutory board established on 15 October 1991 to oversee the development of arts in Singapore. It is under the purview of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. The NAC provides grants, scholarships, awards and platforms for arts practitioners, as well as arts education and programmes for the general public. History In 1989, the Advisory Council on Culture and the Arts, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ong Teng Cheong, produced a report assessing the status of various aspects of arts in Singapore. Chew Kheng Chuan
Chew Kheng Chuan (; born 1957), also known as KC Chew, is a Singaporean fundraiser. The first Singaporean admitted to Harvard College, he is known for pioneering fundraising in Southeast Asia and for his involvement in Operation Spectrum in 1987. From 2000 to 2021, he was Chairman of The Substation, an arts centre in Singapore founded by the playwright Kuo Pao Kun. Early life, education and career Chew enrolled in Anglo-Chinese School (Junior) in 1964, in a batch of students that included Andrew Phang, V.K. Rajah and Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Chew developed an early interest in Singapore politics, and became good friends with Shanmugaratnam in school. In 1978, Chew became the first Singaporean to be admitted to Harvard College. Tao Nan School
Tao Nan School (abbreviation: TNS; Chinese: ), is a co-educational primary school in Singapore. One of the six Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan schools, along with Ai Tong School, Chongfu Primary School, Kong Hwa School, Nan Chiau Primary School and Nan Chiau High School, Tao Nan School is among the 30 most popular primary schools listed by the Ministry of Education. Tao Nan School is also offering the Gifted Education Programme that started in 1996. The Artists Village
The Artists Village (TAV) is a Singapore-based contemporary art group. It is known as Singapore's first art colony, founded by contemporary artist Tang Da Wu in 1988. TAV is historicised as having produced significant shifts in the history of Singapore's contemporary art, known for its engagement with societal changes and issues through late-1980s and 1990s Singapore, with a particular emphasis on performance art, installation art, and Process art, process-based work. Some figures closely associated with TAV, apart from Tang, include Amanda Heng and Lee Wen. The Singapore Short Film Awards (abbreviation: SSFA) is an annual event which promotes and recognises excellence in short films in Singapore. Ho Tzu Nyen
Ho Tzu Nyen (; born 1976) is a Singaporean contemporary artist and filmmaker whose works involve film, video, performance, and immersive multimedia installations. His work brings together fact and myth to mobilise different understandings of Southeast Asia's history, politics, and religion, often premised upon a complex set of references from art history, to theatre, cinema, and philosophy. Tan Pin Pin
Tan Pin Pin (, born 1969) is a Singapore-based film director. She is best known for the documentary film ''Singapore GaGa'' (2005). It was the first Singaporean documentary to have a theatrical run. In 2014, her documentary ''To Singapore, With Love'' (2013) was denied for all ratings by the Media Development Authority, effectively banning it in Singapore.
