''The Shanghai Drama'' (french: Le drame de Shanghaï) is a 1938 French drama film directed by G. W. Pabst and starring Christl Mardayn, Louis Jouvet and Raymond Rouleau.Kennedy-Karpat p.132-33 An exiled White Russian woman works as a cabaret singer in Shanghai to support her daughter through school. Marc Sorkin
Marc Sorkin or Mark Sorkin (1902–1986) was a Russian-born film editor and director.Rentschler p.277 He worked with Georg Wilhelm Pabst on a number of films as editor or assistant director. He was born in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius which was then part of the Russian Empire. He began working in the German film industry in Berlin in the 1920s. Following the Nazi Party's takeover of power in 1933, the Jewish Sorkin left for France where he worked in that country's cinema industry. After the Invasion of France by the Germans in 1940 he left for the United States via Casablanca. Gabrielle Dorziat
Gabrielle Dorziat (1880–1979) was a French stage and film actress. Dorziat was a fashion trend setter in Paris and helped popularize the designs of Coco Chanel. The Théâtre Gabrielle-Dorziat in Épernay, France is named for her. Biography She was born in 1880. Dorziat made her stage début in 1898 at the Théâtre Royal du Parc in Brussels. She moved to Paris and appeared in Alfred Capus' ''La Bourse ou la vie'' (1900), but it was her performance as Thérèse Herbault in ''Chaîne anglaise'' (1906) that brought her to public attention. She became known for her off-stage life as well, becoming romantically involved with actors Lucien Guitry and Louis Jouvet. Suzanne Desprès
Suzanne Desprès (16 December 1875 – 1 July 1951) was a French actress who was born at Verdun, Meuse and trained at the Paris Conservatoire, where in 1897 she obtained the first prize for comedy, and the second for tragedy. She then became associated with, and subsequently married, Lugné-Poe, the actor-manager, who had founded a new school of modern drama at the Théâtre de l'Œuvre. She achieved marked success in several of his plays there. In succeeding years she played at the Gymnase and at the Porte Saint-Martin, and in 1902 made her debut at the Comédie-Française, appearing in ''Phèdre'' and other important parts. Valery Ivanovich Inkizhinov (russian: Валерий Иванович Инкижинов; 25 March 1895 – 26 September 1973), known as Valéry Inkijinoff, was a Russian actor, director and acting teacher. Born to a Buryat family in Irkutsk, he began his career in the Soviet Union, playing the lead role in Vsevolod Pudovkin's 1928 film '' Storm Over Asia.'' He immigrated to France in the 1930s, where his strong facial features made him a favorite villain for exotic adventure and crime films. Early life Inkijinoff was born in Irkutsk gubernia to a Christian Buryat father and an ethnic Russian mother.
