The Lair (Dreamworld)
The Lair is an exotic animal exhibit at the Dreamworld theme park on the Gold Coast, Australia. It opened on 9 April 2011 with two white lions. The exhibit is to be used for a variety of other animals in the future. History On 16 February 2011, Ardent Leisure (the owners of Dreamworld) released their half year results report for the 2011 financial year. The report detailed an outlook for their 30th Birthday year. One of the items listed was an Easter holiday promotion where an exotic animal species will be showcased. Two weeks prior, the Gold Coast Bulletin detailed the rumours of white lions coming to Dreamworld. On 21 February 2011, Dreamworld officially announced via Facebook that white lions would be at Dreamworld for the April school holidays. On 16 March 2011, plans for The Lair were released by Dreamworld. On 9 April 2011, the attraction was officially opened to the public with two white lions. White Lion
The white lion is a rare color mutation of the lion, specifically the Southern African lion. White lions in the area of Timbavati are thought to have been indigenous to the Timbavati region of South Africa for centuries, although the earliest recorded sighting in this region was in 1938. White lions first became known to the English-speaking world in 1977 through the book ''The White Lions of Timbavati''. Description White lions are not albinos. Their white color is caused by a recessive trait, called leucism, derived from a less-severe mutation in the same gene that causes albinism, similar to the gene responsible for white tigers. They vary from blonde to near-white. This coloration does not appear to pose a disadvantage to their survival. White lions were considered to have been technically extinct in the wild between 1992 and 2004, when the Global White Lion Protection Trust achieved the first successful reintroduction of white lions to their natural habitat. Dreamworld's 30th Birthday was celebrated throughout 2011 at the Dreamworld (Australia), Dreamworld amusement park on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Gold Coast, Australia. Overview In August 2010, the owners of Dreamworld, Ardent Leisure, approved a capital expenditure plan in both Dreamworld and WhiteWater World to "strengthen ride inventory and consumer appeal". Sumatran Tiger
The Sumatran tiger is a population of ''Panthera tigris sondaica'' on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It is the only surviving tiger population in the Sunda Islands, where the Bali and Javan tigers are extinct. Sequences from complete mitochondrial genes of 34 tigers support the hypothesis that Sumatran tigers are diagnostically distinct from mainland subspecies. In 2017, the Cat Classification Task Force of the Cat Specialist Group revised felid taxonomy and recognizes the living and extinct tiger populations in Indonesia as '' P. t. sondaica''. The Bengal tiger is a population of the ''Panthera tigris tigris'' subspecies. It ranks among the biggest wild cats alive today. It is considered to belong to the world's charismatic megafauna. The ''Gold Coast Bulletin'' is a daily newspaper serving Australia's Gold Coast region. It is published as ''The Gold Coast Bulletin'' on weekdays and the ''Weekend Bulletin'' at weekends. It is owned by News Corp Australia. History The newspaper has undergone a number of masthead and ownership changes. When Patrick Joseph McNamara started the paper in 1885, he worked in a tin shed on Southport's Lawson Street. He named the paper ''The Southern Queensland Bulletin'', and it was the first newspaper published in Southport. McNamara was succeeded by Mr Shepherd and Mr Mellor. The National Zoo and Aquarium is a privately owned zoo and aquarium in the Australian capital city of Canberra.
