''The Emperor of Portugallia'' (Swedish: ''Kejsarn av Portugallien'') is a 1944 Swedish historical drama film directed by Gustaf Molander and starring Victor Sjöström, Gunn Wållgren and Karl-Arne Holmsten.Qvist & Von Bagh p.115 It was shot at the Råsunda Studios in Stockholm and on location in the city's Old Town and the province of Värmland. The film's sets were designed by the art directors Nils Svenwall and Arne Åkermark. It is based on the 1914 novel of the same title by Selma Lagerlöf, which had previously been adapted into the 1925 American silent film ''The Tower of Lies''. Gustaf Molander
Gustaf Harald August Molander (18 November 1888 – 19 June 1973) was a Sweden, Swedish actor and film director. His parents were director Harald Molander, Sr. (1858–1900) and singer and actress Lydia Molander, ''née'' Wessler, and his brother was the director Olof Molander (1892–1966). He was the father of director and producer Harald Molander from his first marriage to actress Karin Molander and father to actor Jan Molander from his second marriage to Elsa Fahlberg (1892–1977). Gustaf Molander was born in Helsinki, Helsingfors (now Helsinki) in the Grand Duchy of Finland (in the Russian Empire), where his father was working at the Swedish Theatre. He studied in the school of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm 1907–1909, acted at the Swedish theatre in Helsingfors 1909–1913, and then at the Royal Dramatic Theatre from 1913 to 1926. Olof Winnerstrand
Carl Olof Magnus Winnerstrand (26 August 1875 – 16 July 1956) was a Swedish actor. Biography Born in a bourgeois home in Stockholm, Winnerstrand was a son of the well-known Stockholm goldsmith and jeweller C.A. Winnerstrand, and started out in his father's footsteps, learning the trade. His parents opposed his acting dreams and, being loyal to a promise to his father, he took over the family business when his father died in 1899, and worked a couple of years as goldsmith. However, his longing for the stage increased and he was encouraged by great Swedish actor Emil Hillberg in pursuing in acting, after he had witnessed Winnerstrand's striking talent and by offering a place in his theatre company. Hilda Teresia Borgström (13 October 1871 – 2 January 1953) was a Swedish stage and film actress. Biography Born in 1871 in Stockholm, Borgström made her film debut in 1912. She starred in leading parts in Victor Sjöström's silent films ''Ingeborg Holm'' (aka ''Margaret Day'') (1913) and '' Körkarlen'' (aka ''The Phantom Carriage/The Stroke of Midnight/Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness'') in 1921.
