This is a list of media in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Radio St. John's is currently the only Canadian city served by radio stations whose call letters do not all begin with the letter ''C''. The ITU prefix ''VO'' was assigned to the Dominion of Newfoundland before the province joined Canadian Confederation in 1949, and three AM stations kept their existing call letters; the Broadcasting Corporation of Newfoundland's VONF, however, was taken over by CBC Radio and adopted the new call sign CBN. However, radio stations in St. John's which went to air after 1949 use the same range of prefixes (''CF''–''CK'') currently in use elsewhere in Canada, with the exception of VOCM-FM, which was permitted to adopt the VOCM callsign because of its corporate association with the AM station that already bore that callsign. Newfoundland and Labrador (; french: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador; frequently abbreviated as NL) is the easternmost province of Canada, in the country's Atlantic region. VOWR (AM)
VOWR is a radio station in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The station is operated by the Wesley United Church of Canada and operates a mix of 30% religious programming and 70% secular programming, including classical, folk, country, oldies, military/marching band, adult standards, beautiful music and music from the 1940s through the 1970s, interviews and informational programs. VOWR has several information based programs that are of interest to its core demographic including Consumer Reports, a gardening show, the 50+ Radio Show and many others of a wide range of subjects. VOWR is a non-profit station staffed by volunteers, of which many are former broadcasters in the public and private local broadcasting industry. VOWR transmits on 800 kHz. Contemporary hit radio (also known as CHR, contemporary hits, hit list, current hits, hit music, top 40, or pop radio) is a radio format that is common in many countries that focuses on playing current and recurrent popular music as determined by the Top 40 music charts. There are several subcategories, dominantly focusing on rock, pop, or urban music. Used alone, ''CHR'' most often refers to the CHR-pop format. CKIX-FM
CKIX-FM is a Canadian radio station broadcasting on 99.1 FM in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The station currently broadcasts a Top 40/CHR format branded as ''Hot 99.1''. The station is owned by Stingray Group. History Launched by CHUM Limited on October 15, 1983, CKIX-FM originally carried a country format known as ''Country 99 FM'' and then later in the 1980s as ''KIXX Country''. Newcap acquired CKIX and sister station CJYQ from CHUM in 1989. In 1991, the studios were relocated from Duckworth Street to 208 Kenmount Road (which the Capital Hotel now occupies). On February 17, 2002, Newcap converted its recently acquired VOCM-FM from hot AC to classic rock. As an unexpected side effect, CKIX's audience dropped significantly. Mount Pearl
Mount Pearl is the third-largest settlement and second-largest city in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The city is located southwest of St. John's, on the eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. Mount Pearl is the fourth largest settlement in the province and is part of the St. John's metropolitan area, the 20th largest metropolitan area in Canada. History Mount Pearl dates back to 1829, when Commander James Pearl and his wife, Lady Anne Pearl, arrived in Newfoundland with a Crown grant of one thousand acres (4 km²) of land, a reward for Commander Pearl's 27 years of distinguished service in the Royal Navy. VOAR-FM (96.7 MHz) is a Canadian radio station, which airs a christian format. It is licensed to Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, and serves the St. John's metropolitan area. VOAR is owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Newfoundland & Labrador. Its radio studios and offices are on Topsail Road in Mount Pearl. The transmitter is off Kenmount Road, also in Mount Pearl. The effective radiated power (ERP) is 100,000 watts. Adult contemporary music (AC) is a form of radio-played popular music, ranging from 1960s vocal and 1970s soft rock music to predominantly ballad-heavy music of the present day, with varying degrees of easy listening, pop, soul, R&B, quiet storm and rock influence. CHOZ-FM
CHOZ-FM is a Canadian radio station based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Its main St. John's transmitter broadcasts at 94.7 MHz, with additional transmitters located throughout the island. The station, known as ''OZFM'', is one of the various media properties of the Stirling family; this includes local television station CJON-DT. History CHOZ launched on June 15, 1977 at 93.9 FM, soon after Geoff Stirling sold his interest in what is now CJYQ. Memorial University of Newfoundland Students' Union, (popularly known as "MUNSU") is an undergraduate Student center, student union located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. CHMR-FM
CHMR-FM is a campus radio station broadcasting on the campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada at 93.5 MHz, Rogers Cable channel 942 and Aliant TV channel 825. The Memorial University of Newfoundland Radio Society received approval by the CRTC in 1986 to operate on 93.5 MHz. The 93.5 frequency launched in January 1987.
