The Coldest Game
''The Coldest Game'' (Polish: ''Ukryta gra'') is a 2019 English-language Polish spy film. It is directed by Łukasz Kośmicki and stars Bill Pullman as Joshua Mansky, an American alcoholic former chess champion who becomes involved in a Cold War confrontation between nuclear superpowers. This spy thriller is the last film produced by Piotr Woźniak-Starak, who died in an apparent boating accident shortly before the premiere. Plot In 1962, at the height of the Cold War, President Kennedy warns that the USSR is preparing for war, during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The first scene is the Grand Master chess match between the dazed American with blood on his hand who walks out to the already seated Russian. Łukasz Kośmicki
Łukasz Kośmicki (born September 9, 1968) is a Polish cinematographer, screenwriter and director, known for ''Dom zły'' (''The Dark House'') and ''The Coldest Game''. Kośmicki received the Special Award at the 2019 Gdynia Film Festival for the spy film ''The Coldest Game'', described as "exquisitely made genre cinema". The film was picked up by Netflix and is distributed internationally. Career Kośmicki's debut as a cinematographer was with ''Gry uliczne''. He mentions how he tried to make that film "MTV-like" to distinguish it from typical films about the Communist era (he said the idea came from Krzysztof Krauze). World Chess Championship 1972
The World Chess Championship 1972 was a match for the World Chess Championship between challenger Bobby Fischer of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. The match took place in the Laugardalshöll arena in Reykjavík, Iceland, and has been dubbed the Match of the Century. Fischer became the first American born in the United States to win the world title, and the second American overall (Wilhelm Steinitz, the first world champion, became a naturalized American citizen in 1888). Fischer's win also ended, for a short time, 24 years of Soviet domination of the World Championship. The first game was played on July 11, 1972. The last game (the 21st) began on August 31, was after 40 moves, and Spassky resigned the next day without resuming play.
