Texas Press Women
Press Women of Texas (PWT) is an association of Texas women journalists which was founded in 1893. PWT is an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW). PWT was involved in more than just supporting women in journalism; the organization advocated many causes, including education, preservation of library and archive materials and supporting scholarships. They also supported women's suffrage in Texas in 1915. Angela Smith is the current president of PWT. History Press Women of Texas (PWT) was started on May 10, 1893 in Dallas and was originally named the Texas Woman's Press Association (TWPA). Aurelia Hadley Mohl, a journalist from Houston invited 38 women to hear a proposal to form the TWPA in 1893. Mohl had been a member of the Woman's National Press Association and felt that a similar group in Texas would be good for women writers in that state. Willie Franklin Pruit
Willie Franklin Pruitt (sometimes misspelled "Pruit"; pen name, Aylmer Ney; January 11, 1865 – February 22, 1947) was an American activist and author. She was engaged in charitable and public enterprises. She was a member of the Texas board of lady managers of the World's Fair Exhibit Association, and the vice-president of the Woman's Humane Association of Fort Worth. Due to her efforts, the city installed a number of drinking fountains for people and for animals. Early life Wilhelmina (nickname, "Willie") Franklin was born in Tennessee, on January 11, 1865. She belonged to one of the oldest and most aristocratic families of Tennessee, her family being closely identified with the social and political aristocracy of that State before the Civil War. Woman's Christian Temperance Union
The Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) is an international temperance organization, originating among women in the United States Prohibition movement. It was among the first organizations of women devoted to social reform with a program that "linked the religious and the secular through concerted and far-reaching reform strategies based on applied Christianity."
