Ted Gaskell
Edward Gaskell (19 December 1916 – 10 February 2009) was an English professional footballer, coach and manager. He is best remembered for his time in the Football League with Brentford, with whom he had a 15-year association as a goalkeeper and coach. He also held coaching positions at non-League clubs Hendon, Wealdstone, Southall and with the Football Association at Lilleshall. Playing career Early years A goalkeeper, Gaskell began his career playing for local club Romiley St Chad's, before moving to Football League club Stockport County, for whom he failed to make an appearance. He moved to Second Division club Chesterfield in June 1936 and departed the following year, again without making an appearance. After writing to every Cheshire League club in a bid to find a new club, Gaskell was offered a trial at Buxton in 1937 and remained with the club for a short period. Bredbury
Bredbury is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, Greater Manchester, England, south-east of Manchester, east of Stockport and south-west of Hyde. Lilleshall
Lilleshall is a village and civil parish in the county of Shropshire, England. It lies between the towns of Telford and Newport, on the A518, in the Telford and Wrekin borough and the Wrekin constituency. There is one school in the centre of the village. The village dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, the parish church being founded by St Chad. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Harry Curtis (football Manager)
Henry Charles Curtis (22 January 1890 – 30 January 1966) was an English footballer, referee and manager, best-remembered for his 23 years as manager of Brentford. He is Brentford's longest-serving and most successful manager to date. In a 2013 Football League 125th anniversary poll, Curtis was voted Brentford's greatest-ever manager. He was posthumously inducted into the Brentford Hall of Fame in May 2015. Playing and refereeing career Curtis' first involvement in football was as secretary of Shernall United and he later had brief spells as a player for Romford and Walthamstow Grange. The Football Combination was a football competition for the reserve teams of English Football League clubs from Southern England, the Midlands and Wales; other clubs from the Midlands and those from the North playing in the Central League (it is not to be confused with the Combination, a league for teams from North West England which existed at the turn of the 20th century). Joe Crozier (footballer, Born 1914)
Joseph Crozier (2 December 1914 – 27 July 1985) was a Scottish professional footballer who made 200 appearances in the Football League for Brentford as a goalkeeper. Crozier has been described as Brentford's best-ever goalkeeper and he is a member of the club's Hall of Fame. He represented Scotland in wartime international matches. Playing career Crozier began his career at junior team Strathclyde and moved to Scottish League Second Division club East Fife in 1934. He made 100 appearances for the club and earned a £1,000 move to English First Division club Brentford in May 1937. Either side of the Second World War, Crozier made 224 appearances for the Bees. James Mathieson
James Adamson Mathieson (10 May 1904 – 13 April 1950) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper in the Football League for Middlesbrough and Brentford. He made over 500 professional appearances in the English and Scottish leagues. Mathieson is the only player to win three English Second Division championship medals, as an ever-present in each season. Career Early years A goalkeeper, Mathieson began his career in Scotland with junior clubs Dubbleside Hearts and Colinsburgh United. He got his break when he signed for Scottish League First Division club Partick Thistle in 1922. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981.
