Tatchun (electoral District)
Tatchun was an electoral district which returned an MLA to the Legislative Assembly of the Yukon Territory in Canada. It was created in 1978 out of the ridings of Klondike and Pelly River. It was abolished in 1992 when it was amalgamated with the riding of Mayo to form the riding of Mayo-Tatchun. The district included the communities of Carmacks, Pelly Crossing, and Little Salmon. It was situated on the historical territory of the Selkirk First Nation, the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun, the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation, and the Ross River Dena Council of the Kaska Dena. At creation, the population of the electorate was 325 voters and by abolition it was 418 voters. When partisan politics was introduced to the Yukon in the 1978 election, Tatchun was one of the initial electoral districts established. At the time, it was one of the Yukon's nine rural ridings. Carmacks, Yukon
Carmacks is a village in Yukon, Canada, on the Yukon River along the Klondike Highway, and at the west end of the Robert Campbell Highway from Watson Lake. The population is 493 (Canada Census, 2016). It is the home of the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation, a Northern Tutchone-speaking people. History The name of the community comes from George Washington Carmack who found coal near Tantalus Butte (locally called Coal Mine Hill) in the early 1890s. He built a trading post near the present site of Carmacks and traded with locals before opening a coal mine in the south bank of the Yukon River. The focus of his entrepreneurial energy switched a few years later when he or his wife, Kate Carmack, discovered gold with her brother, Keish (Skookum Jim), and Dawson Charlie (Tagish Charlie) at what was to become the Discovery Claim, near Dawson City, which started the Klondike Gold Rush. 1978 Yukon General Election
The 1978 Yukon general election was held on November 20, 1978, was the first conventional legislative election in the history of Canada's Yukon Territory. Prior elections were held to elect representatives to the Yukon Territorial Council, a non-partisan body that acted in an advisory role to the Commissioner of the Yukon. Following the passage of the Yukon Elections Act in 1977, the 1978 election was the first time that voters in the Yukon elected representatives to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in an election organized along political party lines. Hilda Watson, the first woman ever to lead a political party into an election in Canada, was the leader of the Progressive Conservatives. Although the party won the election, Watson herself was defeated in Kluane by Liberal candidate Alice McGuire, and thus did not become government leader. Yukon New Democratic Party
The Yukon New Democratic Party (NDP; french: Nouveau Parti démocratique du Yukon) is a social-democratic political party in the Yukon territory of Canada. The Yukon NDP first formed the government of the territory under the leadership of Tony Penikett from 1985 to 1992, and under the leadership of Piers McDonald from 1996 to 2000. The party's current leader is Kate White. The NDP sat as official opposition to the current Yukon Party government in the Yukon Legislative Assembly until May 2006. Danny Joe
Danny Joe is a former Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Tatchun from 1987 to 1992, and Mayo-Tatchun from 1992 to 1996, in the Yukon Legislative Assembly. A member of the Yukon New Democratic Party, Joe was formerly a Chief of the Selkirk First Nation. He first won the riding in a by-election in 1987, following the resignation of Roger Coles, and was reelected in the 1989 election. He was subsequently re-elected in the redistricted Mayo-Tatchun in the 1992 election. Yukon Liberal Party
The Yukon Liberal Party (french: Parti libéral du Yukon) is a political party in the territory of Yukon, Canada. The party is not organizationally linked to the federal Liberal Party of Canada in any official manner. Sandy Silver, MLA for Klondike, is the Leader of the Yukon Liberal Party and Premier of Yukon.
