Tyner Academy
Tyner High School is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States. It was built in 1907 as the first secondary school in Hamilton County east of the Missionary Ridge at the site of the current Tyner Middle Academy. The first class consisted of 25 students. The school was moved to the current location, which has had many additions and changes since 1937. Today Tyner Academy serves around 876 students, in grades 9-12, in three Career Academies and a Freshman Academy. Hamilton County Schools (or Hamilton County Department of Education) is the school district that serves Hamilton County, Tennessee, USA. After a 1995 referendum, the then-separate Chattanooga City Schools district was merged into the county district in 1997. About 2,300 high school seniors graduated from the system in May 2011. Missionary Ridge
Missionary Ridge is a geographic feature in Chattanooga, Tennessee, site of the Battle of Missionary Ridge, a battle in the American Civil War, fought on November 25, 1863. Union forces under Maj. Gens. Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and George H. Thomas routed Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg and lifted the siege of the city. Missionary Ridge runs basically north–south for several miles and varies in width from a few feet to over , with very steep, nearly vertical sides that rise over from the ground surrounding it. Missionary Ridge was so named for the early missionaries who made their way along paths climbing the ridge on their way to Brainerd Village to the settlement of the Cherokee. It was also referred to as "Mission Ridge" in the early years. The southernmost end of the ridge extends into Georgia.
