Two Women On The Hillside
''Two Women on the Hillside'' is an oil-on-canvas painting created in 1906 by German painter Franz Marc. It is part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections and is on a permanent loan at the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See. History Marc met the fellow painters Marie Schnür and Maria Marc, Maria Franck in 1905, who would both later become his wives. He spent the summer of 1906 in Kochel. He painted the women at outdoors on an alpine pasture. He first made the current small oil sketch, from which he later painted a large-format oil painting. On August 1, 1906, he wrote to Maria Marc, Maria Franck: “The picture of you two has already been drawn.” Later he cut up the large painting. The remainder of this is the portrait of Maria Marc in the Murnau Castle Museum. In 1985 the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen acquired the painting from the estate of Maria Marc, née Franck. Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. It has been the most common technique for artistic painting on wood panel or canvas for several centuries, spreading from Europe to the rest of the world. Franz Marc
Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc (8 February 1880 – 4 March 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of ''Der Blaue Reiter'' (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it. His mature works mostly depict animals, and are known for bright colouration. He was drafted to serve in the German Army at the beginning of World War I, and died two years later at the Battle of Verdun. In the 1930s, the Nazis named him a degenerate artist as part of their suppression of modern art. However, most of his work survived World War II, securing his legacy. Kochel am See is a municipality and a town in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen in Bavaria, on the shores of Kochelsee. The municipality consists of the districts Altjoch, Brunnenbach, Ort, Pessenbach, Pfisterberg, Walchensee and Ried. The Franz Marc Museum is a museum located in Kochel am See, Upper Bavaria, dedicated to German Expressionist painter Franz Marc. Marie Schnür, or Marie Marc-Schnür, (19 February 1869, Krien – 16 February 1934, Swinemünde) was a German painter, illustrator and silhouette maker. From 1907 to 1908, she was married to the painter Franz Marc. Biography She was one of five daughters born to a wealthy family from Coburg, on a large estate, the garden house of which is still preserved as a historical monument. Maria Marc, née Bertha Pauline Marie Franck (12 June 1876 - 25 January 1955), was a German artist. She is also known as the wife of the painter Franz Marc. Biography She was born on 12 June 1876 in Berlin, Germany. She attended the ''Unterrichtanstalt des Kunstgewerbemuseum'', the ''Königliche Akademie der Künste'' (Royal Academy of Arts,Berlin), and the ''Damen-Akademie des Künstlerinnen-Vereins'' (Ladies Academy of the Artists' Association, Munich). She met the artist Franz Marc in 1905, marrying him in 1913. Her work was included in the first exhibition of the Blauer Reiter group. After Franz Marc's death she studied textile art at the Bauhaus. Post-Impressionism (also spelled Postimpressionism) was a predominantly French art movement that developed roughly between 1886 and 1905, from the last Impressionist exhibition to the birth of Fauvism.
