''Two Crabs'' is an 1889 oil painting by Vincent van Gogh. It is a still life of two crabs, one on its back and one upright, with a green background. The work is oil on canvas of high and wide. Van Gogh is thought to have painted this work after his hospital release in January 1889. It was possibly inspired by a Japanese print of a crab by Hokusai that he had seen in the magazine ''Le Japon Artistique'', that his brother Theo van Gogh had sent him in September 1888. The painting is held by the National Gallery in London, on loan from a private collector. ''Artistic Japan'' was a magazine of Japanese art, published by German-born French art dealer Siegfried Bing. It ran for thirty-six monthly issues from 1888 to 1891 in French, English, and German editions and contributed to a revival of Japonism. Background Art critics and collectors in Europe spearheaded a craze for Japanese art in the late 19th century; prominent promoters of this Japonism included Edmond de Goncourt (1822–96), Philippe Burty (1830–90), and Siegfried Bing (1838–1905). Burty made an attempt at a magazine devoted to Japanese art that lasted a single issue. Theo Van Gogh (art Dealer)
Theodorus van GoghNaifeh, Steven and Gregory White Smith. Van Gogh: the Life, p.23 New York: Random House (2011); (; 1 May 1857 – 25 January 1891) was a Dutch art dealer, the younger brother of Vincent van Gogh. Theo's unfailing financial and emotional support allowed his brother to devote himself entirely to painting. Theo died at the age of 33, six months after his brother died at the age of 37. At his death Theo owned practically all of his brother's artwork. Theo's widow Jo van Gogh-Bonger worked tirelessly to promote the work of Vincent and keep alive the memory of her husband. Theo made a significant impact on the art world as an art dealer, playing a crucial role in the introduction of contemporary Dutch and French art to the public.
