Two Boats Village
Two Boats is a village at the foot of Green Mountain, Ascension Island, about 3 miles (4.8 km) from Wideawake Airfield. It has a population of about 120 and is residential in nature. History The ''two boats'' were originally placed to provide shade for Royal Marines transporting water in the 19th century. Ascension Island
Ascension Island is an isolated volcanic island, 7°56′ south of the Equator in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is about from the coast of Africa and from the coast of South America. It is governed as part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, of which the main island, Saint Helena, is around to the southeast. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. Wideawake Airfield
RAF Ascension Island , also known as Wideawake Airfield or Ascension Island Auxiliary Field, is a military airfield and facility located on Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean. The airfield is jointly operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the United States Space Force (USSF). Under the terms of an international agreement between the UK and US governments, only state aircraft (e.g. military and diplomatic flights) are authorised to land at Ascension; however, it is also open to air services between Saint Helena and Ascension. Two Boats School is in Two Boats Village on Ascension Island. It is part of the Ascension Island Government (AIG) and provides education to all children living on the island from Foundation Stage to Year 11. There are currently 100 children and 21 staff. Outline The school follows the National Curriculum for England. Although geographically in the Southern Hemisphere, the school follows a Northern Hemisphere term pattern with the main holidays split between Christmas and August. Green Mountain is a common name for "The Peak", the highest point on Ascension Island, which has gained some fame for claims that it is one of very few large-scale artificial forests. History and vegetation Many early 19th-century accounts, including Charles Darwin's (July 1836), described the volcanic island as barren with very few plants, some of them endemic to the island, not to be found anywhere else. Scientists estimate the island's native vascular plants to be between 25 and 30 species, 10 of them endemic to Ascension. This impoverished flora is a consequence of the age of the island (only 1 million years old) and isolation (over from any major landmass).
