Twiss County
Twiss County was one of the 26 counties of Western Australia that were designated in 1829 as cadastral divisions. It was named after Horace Twiss, Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies from 1828 to 1830, a personal friend of Lieutenant-Governor James Stirling. It extended from Muchea and Yanchep in the south to Mogumber and Ledge Point in the north. Horace Twiss
Horace Twiss KC (28 February 1787 – 4 May 1849) was an English writer and politician. Life Twiss was born at Bath, Somerset, the son of Francis Twiss (1760–1827) and his wife Frances née Kemble (sister of Sarah Siddons née Kemble). He was a Shakespearian scholar. In his youth he wrote light articles for newspapers; he became a successful lawyer and was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1827. In 1820 he was elected to Parliament, where, with some interruptions, he sat until 1841, holding the office of Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies in 1828–1830. In 1844 he was appointed vice-chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, a well-paid post which enabled him to enjoy his popularity in London society. For some years he wrote for ''The Times'', in which he first compiled the parliamentary summary, and his daughter married first Francis Bacon (d. 1840) and then J. T. Muchea, Western Australia
Muchea is a town in the Shire of Chittering, located north north-east of Perth. Its postcode is 6501. The town's name comes from the Aboriginal word "Muchela" which means in Nyoongar 'water hole', referring to the abundance of water in Muchea. History The area was first surveyed as farmland in 1845 as part of a property to be owned by George Moore. The opening of a railway siding in the area between 1892 and 1898 caused permanent structures to be built and by 1903 farmlots were surveyed close to the siding. Yanchep, Western Australia
Yanchep is an outer coastal suburb of Perth, Western Australia, north of the Perth CBD. It is a part of the City of Wanneroo local government area. Originally a small crayfishing settlement, it was developed by entrepreneur Alan Bond in the 1970s for the 1977 America's Cup. Mogumber, Western Australia
Mogumber is a locality in Western Australia. It is in the Shire of Victoria Plains, and situated along the Bindoon Moora Road. Although it is a settlement, it is not officially a townsite. It is the location where the Moore River East joins the Moore River. As of the 2016 Australian census, Mogumber had a population of 59. A grain storage bin was built at Mogumber in 1980 by CBH Group. Ledge Point, Western Australia
Ledge Point is a small coastal township 105 km north of Perth, Western Australia. It was established to service the local fishing and crayfishing industries. The town's name originates from the nearby coastal feature of the same name, a series of rocky ledges on the point that was first described in an 1875 hydrographic survey. The Gingin Road Board requested that land be set aside in the area in 1937 for camping and recreation purposes. In 1952 there were three squatters' shacks that had been built in the reserve and once a road was completed into the area in 1953 more people began to request land leases. The government decided to subdivide the area in 1954 and sell blocks for retirees and holiday housing. The town was gazetted in 1955.
