Tusket River
The Tusket River is a Canadian river located in Nova Scotia's Yarmouth County. Geography The Tusket River is a significant river system and drainage basin in Yarmouth County, southwest Nova Scotia. It has numerous branches and associated rivers, passes through several lakes, and has these features. Near its mouth, the river becomes a tidal estuary, with the water becoming brackish due to mixing of the river's fresh water with salt brought upstream from the Gulf of Maine by incoming tides. The headwaters of the river lie in the Tobeatic Wilderness Area, which is part of the larger Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve. Natural history Flora The river is nationally significant for its many coastal plain plant species. Some, like the Plymouth Gentian (''Sabatia kennedyana'') and Pink Coreopsis (''Coreopsis rosea'') occur nowhere else in Canada. Wedgeport is a unincorporated place in the Municipality of the District of Argyle in Southern Nova Scotia, Canada. History Wedgeport was settled in 1767 by returning Acadians who had been deported to the Boston area. The village of Wedgeport was formally called Tusket Wedge, and was also at one time called the "Chebec". In 1909 by an Act of Parliament, it was changed to Wedgeport. In the 20th century, many famous Americans and Canadians traveled here due to large amounts of tuna in the area, including Babe Ruth, President Franklin Roosevelt, Kate Smith, Gene Tunney, Amelia Earhart, Ernest Hemingway, Jean Béliveau, Ethel du Pont, Thomas Gifford, Michael Lerner, Zane Grey and Tony Hulman. Sluice Point (french: Pointe du Sault) is a community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in the Argyle Municipality in Yarmouth County. Education The school started with the primary department in 1870. There was opposition to both the school and the Indian Sluice Point Bridge (to Surette's Island). Education was not well understood then, and one man, Jacques Babin, stubbornly affirmed that no bridge or school would be built while he was alive. In the primary department there were about twenty-five seats. It was big enough at that time, but the population increased, so they built the advanced department in 1902.
