Turkish Cypriot Community Awards
The Turkish Cypriot Community Awards was launched in 2018. It recognises the impact that members of the Turkish Cypriot charity sector have made in the United Kingdom. The awards are voted for by members of the community and presented by dignitaries at an event gala including Tufan Erhürman Prime Minister of Northern Cyprus. The first awards event were presented in 2019. In 2020, due to the outbreak of COVID-19 the Turkish Cypriot Community Awards did not proceed beyond nominations. Erim Metto
Erim Metto, a child of migrants, (born: 25 July 1966; Erim Hassan) is a Turkish- British film director, producer, screenwriter, and business executive. He is the director of the RAaW (film and theatre training company) and CEO of the Turkish Cypriot Community Association. He is the first Turkish Speaking magistrate in the United Kingdom. He was the editor of the book ''Departures and Arrivals'' written by Hatice Abdullah. He was a torch bearer for the 2012 London Olympics. Metto was the recipient of the first Turkish Cypriot Community Achiever Award (Male). Early years Metto studies at Greenwich University, following graduation, he started to work for the London Borough of Haringey, and within a year, took the role of Race Equality Officer within the Tottenham constituency, which incorporates Broadwater Farm. Turkish Cypriots
Turkish Cypriots or Cypriot Turks ( tr, Kıbrıs Türkleri or ''Kıbrıslı Türkler''; el, Τουρκοκύπριοι, Tourkokýprioi) are ethnic Turks originating from Cyprus. Tufan Erhürman
Tufan Erhürman (born 1970) is a Turkish Cypriot academic, lawyer, diplomat and a former Prime Minister of Northern Cyprus. A scholar in public law by profession, he served in the negotiations to solve the Cyprus dispute between 2008 and 2010. He previously worked for the Ministry of Justice of Turkey between 1999 and 2004 and worked for the establishment of the position of ombudsman in Turkey. He is the current leader of Republican Turkish Party. He held the office of Prime Minister beginning January 2018 as the leader of a four-party coalition. The coalition government resigned on 9 May 2019, with Erhürman continuing as Prime Minister until the office was taken over by Ersin Tatar on 22 May 2019. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus takes place in a framework of a semi-presidential representative democratic republic. The president is head of state and the prime minister head of government, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Assembly of the Republic. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. The prime minister must control a majority of parliament in order to govern. There have been ten prime ministers of Northern Cyprus since 1983. Meral Hussein Ece, Baroness Hussein-Ece, (born 10 October 1955) is a British Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords. She is the first woman of Turkish Cypriot origin to be a member of either house of Parliament after she was appointed a Liberal Democrat working peer on 28 May 2010. She was the Liberal Democrat Spokeswoman for Equalities from 2015 until 2016, under leader Tim Farron. Early life Baroness Hussein-Ece was born in Islington.
