Tunes (Silves)
Tunes is a village in the civil parish of Algoz e Tunes, in the municipality of Silves, in Algarve region, Portugal. It was the seat of its own civil parish until 2013 when the parish of Tunes merged into the new parish of Algoz e Tunes. In 2001 there were 2002 inhabitants, in an area of approximately : there were 167 residents per kilometre square. Tunes is an important railway hub in southern Portugal. History The opinion that persists around the toponymic name of the area, ''Tunes'', is that it was so named for the number of colonists from north Africa, primarily from Tunis. Those who believe in this origin site the medieval French marigold (''Tagetes patula'') flower of Tunes, a herbaceous plant similar to the carnation (with cut petals and yellow flower) and common in Tunes, Portugal as well as in Tunisia. Linha Do Algarve
Linha do Algarve is a railway line in the region of Algarve, in southern Portugal, which connects the stations of Lagos to the west and Vila Real de Santo António to the east of the Portuguese region. Geography The line runs east to west along the southern municipalities of the Algarve, except for part of Lagos municipality and all of Vila do Bispo municipality which doesn't have railway. The main stations are Vila Real de Santo António, Tavira, Olhão, Faro, Albufeira, Tunes, Silves, Portimão and Lagos. Other stations include Fuseta, Bom João (Faro), Almancil, Algoz and Estômbar. Linha Do Sul
Linha do Sul is a Portuguese railway line which connects Campolide A, in Lisbon, and Tunes, in the Algarve. The first section, from Pinhal Novo to Setúbal, was opened in 1861. The route to Funcheira opened on 25 May 1920. In 2003 it was linked to Lisbon, crossing the Tagus River on the 25 de Abril Bridge. The section between Pinhal Novo and Funcheira was classified as Linha do Sado until 1992, while the section from Barreiro to Vila Real de Santo António via Vendas Novas and Beja was classified as Linha do Sul. Silves () is a city and municipality in the Portuguese region of Algarve, in southern Portugal. The population of the entire municipality of Silves in 2011 was 37,126, in an area of 680.06 km2. A junction, in the context of rail transport, is a place at which two or more rail routes converge or diverge. This implies a physical connection between the tracks of the two routes (assuming they are of the same gauge), provided by ''points'' (US: switches) and signalling. Junctions are important for rail systems, their installation into a rail system can expand route capacity, and have a powerful impact upon on-time performance. Overview In a simple case where two routes with one or two tracks each meet at a junction, a fairly simple layout of tracks suffices to allow trains to transfer from one route to the other.
