2007 Australian Equine Influenza Outbreak
An outbreak of equine influenza (EI) in Australia was confirmed by the Department of Primary Industries (New South Wales) on 24 August 2007 in Sydney. Also known as "horse flu" and "A1 influenza", the rapid outbreak was of the Influenza A virus strain of subtype H3N8. While the virus is highly contagious, it rarely kills adult horses but the performance of thoroughbred racing horses can be affected for several weeks. It can be fatal to young foals and debilitated horses. Because of strict quarantine procedures to reduce the risk of exotic pests and diseases entering Australia, this was the first outbreak of equine influenza in Australia. Horses in Australia had not been exposed to the virus and, not being vaccinated, were fully susceptible. A combination of control measures was successful in combating the outbreak. Beauford (horse)
Beauford, was a brown Thoroughbred gelding, performing in Australia was best known for the races against the New Zealand champion Gloaming at Randwick Racecourse in 1922. Beauford raced exclusively in N.S.W from a three-year-old to a nine-year-old recording 17 wins from 6 furlongs to 1½ miles with regular jockey Albert Wood winning 12 races. Breeding Beauford was bred by the Mackay family at the Tinagroo stud northwest of Scone by Beau Soult (NZ) and winner of the 1913 Rosehill Guineas his dam Blueford (AUS) was unraced with all seven foals being winners. Amounis was an Australian Thoroughbred Hall of Fame racehorse. He won 33 races over distances ranging from 6 to 12 furlongs (1,200 to 2,400 metres). Of these wins, 27 were in "Principal Races" (equivalent to today's Group races or "Black Type" races), 16 of these races have since been promoted to Group One (G1) status. Chatham (foaled 1928) was an outstanding Australian Thoroughbred racehorse that was bred by Percy Miller at the Kia Ora Stud near Scone in the Hunter Region, New South Wales. Pedigree He was the best son of the 1925 Melbourne Cup winner Windbag. His dam Myosotis was a granddaughter of the 1899 English Triple Crown winner, Flying Fox. Myosotis was the dam of eight foals all of which raced and included four winners. Chatham's half-brother, Cetosis was the best of these four winners, having won 16 races in Perth, Western Australia and in the country. Chatham's fourth dam, Paqresseuse was a sister to the undefeated Grand Flaneur. Chatham was sold at the 1930 Sydney yearling sales for 650 guineas to trainer, Ike Foulsham. Rogilla was a chestnut Australian thoroughbred gelding, who was a versatile racehorse performing in Australia. Known as the ''Coalfields Champion'' from Newcastle, Rogilla raced during a vintage era of the Australian turf. Shannon (1941–1955), named Shannon II in America, was an outstanding Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who was inducted into the Hall of Fame. He created new racecourse records in Australia before he was sold to an American buyer who exported him to California in 1948. There Shannon equalled the world record of 1:47 for the nine furlongs (1,800 metres) in winning the Forty Niner Handicap Stakes, then one week later equalled the world record of 1:59 for a mile and a quarter (2,000 metres). Wenona Girl’s principal wins included the VRC Sires Produce Stakes, AJC Sires Produce Stakes, George Adams Handicap, One Thousand Guineas, VATC Futurity Stakes, AJC George Main Stakes, AJC All Aged Stakes, AJC Adrian Knox Oaks Stakes, Rawson Stakes and Rosehill Guineas, all of which were later classified as G1 races.
