Tozer is a surname commonly believed to have originated in Devon, South West England. It is a reference to the occupation of carding of wool which was originally performed by the use of teasels (Latin ''carduus''), via the Middle English word ''tōsen'', to tease ut The surname has variants, including the lesser-known "Tozier". The Tozers of Moretonhampstead According to the Moretonhampstead History Society, the Tozer family was, by 1332, established at Howton, which was part of the manor of Moreton until it was alienated. A 15th-century record in the Public Record Office (C.1/56/207) records a legal dispute between John and William Tozer over "Houghton in the parish of Moreton". There are several gravestones and a chest tomb to later members of the Tozer family in the churchyard of Moretonhampstead parish church. Elishama Tozer
Elishama Tozer (July 3, 1741 – 1833) was an American politician from New York (state), New York. Life He was born on July 3, 1741, in Lyme, New Hampshire, the son of Thomas Tozer (born 1711) and Deborah (Bates) Tozer (born 1718). In 1761, he married Mary, and they had several children. They lived in Whitehall (town), New York, Whitehall, New York. During the American Revolutionary War, he was a lieutenant in the Green Mountain Boys under Maj. John Brown of Pittsfield, John Brown. He was a member from Charlotte County, Province of New York, Charlotte County of the New York State Assembly in 2nd New York State Legislature, 1778-79 and a member of the New York State Senate (Eastern D.) in 3rd New York State Legislature, 1779-80. Vivian Tozer
Vivian Hoyles Tozer (1870–1954) was a solicitor and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Vivian Hoyles Tozer was born on 27 May 1870 in Gympie, the son of Horace Tozer (a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Wide Bay) and his wife Mary Hoyles (née Wilson). He was involved in the Wide Bay Light Horse Regiment and was a keen rifleman. Politics A member of the Country and Progressive National Party, Tozer represented Gympie in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 11 May 1929 to 11 May 1935. Later life Tozer donated the land on which Gympie State High School stands. Tozer died on 5 September 1954 in Gympie, survived by his wife and son. Solomon Tozer
Franklin's lost expedition was a failed British voyage of Arctic exploration led by Captain Sir John Franklin that departed England in 1845 aboard two ships, and , and was assigned to traverse the last unnavigated sections of the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic and to record magnetic data to help determine whether a better understanding could aid navigation. Keith Tozer is a retired American soccer player who played professionally in the Major Indoor Soccer League, American Soccer League and American Indoor Soccer Association. He is currently the commissioner of the Major Arena Soccer League. Player College Tozer grew up in upstate New York. After graduating from high school, he attended Oneonta State from 1975 to 1979, where he played as a forward on the men's soccer team. John Tozer
John Carmichael Tozer (23 June 1922 – 23 April 1990) was an Australian public servant and politician who served as a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1974 to 1980, representing North Province. Tozer was born in Perth to Evaline (née Carmichael) and Hubert John Harris Tozer. He attended Hale School and Perth Technical College, and in 1940 was accepted as an engineering cadet with Western Australian Government Railways. He enlisted in the Australian Army later in the year, however, and during the war served for periods with the Royal Australian Engineers, the 2/6th Commando Squadron, and the Parachute Training Centre. Henry Tozer (1602–1650) was an English priest and academic, a Puritan of royalist views, elected to the Westminster Assembly but never sitting there. Life Born at North Tawton, Devon, he matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford on 3 May 1621, and graduated Bachelor of Arts (BA) on 18 June 1623, and Oxford Master of Arts (MA Oxon) on 28 April 1626. He took holy orders, was appointed lecturer at St Martin's Church ( Carfax, Oxford) on 21 October 1632, and proceeded Bachelor of Divinity (BD) on 28 July 1636. Of puritan views, he was elected in 1643 to the Westminster Assembly, but refused to sit; he also declined the degree of Doctor of Divinity (DD) when nominated for it on 6 June 1646.
