Townley is an unincorporated community in Walker County, Alabama, United States. It was formerly an incorporated town from 1895 until the 1920s. Townley has one site on the National Register of Historic Places, Boshell's Mill. Demographics Townley, a coal-mining town, was initially incorporated in 1895. It appeared on the next three consecutive U.S. Censuses, reaching its zenith in 1920, when it became the 4th largest town in Walker County, with 1,554 residents. At some point after 1920 the coal mine shut down and the town either disincorporated or lost its charter, and has not appeared on census rolls since. Geography Townley is located at an elevation of . Carter Manasco
Carter Manasco (January 3, 1902 – February 5, 1992) was a U.S. Representative from Alabama. Born in Townley, Alabama, Manasco attended the public schools and Howard College, Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law, LL.B., 1927 and J.D. 1929. He was admitted to the bar the same year and began practice in Jasper, Alabama. He served as member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1930 to 1934. He served as secretary to Speaker William B. Bankhead, 1933-1940. Manasco was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Walter W. Bankhead. He was reelected to the Seventy-eighth, Seventy-ninth, and Eightieth Congresses and served from June 24, 1941, to January 3, 1949. Alabama's 4th congressional district is a U.S. congressional district in Alabama, which elects a representative to the United States House of Representatives. It encompasses the counties of Franklin, Colbert, Marion, Lamar, Fayette, Walker, Winston, Cullman, Lawrence, Marshall, Etowah, and DeKalb. Tom Donald Fike Bevill (March 27, 1921 – March 28, 2005) was an American attorney, politician, and Democratic fifteen-term U.S. congressman who represented Alabama's 4th Congressional District and Alabama's 7th congressional district from 1967 to 1997. Early years and education Bevill was born in Townley, Alabama, on March 27, 1921. He attended Walker County High School, the University of Alabama School of Commerce and Business Administration, and the University of Alabama School of Law. Bevill was an initiate of the Gamma Alpha chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha at UA. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He also privately practiced law. Boshell's Mill
Boshell's Mill is the historic site of a gristmill and sawmill on Lost Creek near Townley in rural Walker County, Alabama. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. It was recorded by the Historic American Engineering Record as part of the Birmingham District in 1992. History Boshell's Mill, one of several mills run by the Boshell family in Walker County, was started by William R. Boshell in 1885. It was initially a steam engine-powered sawmill only, with the creek used to transport logs to the mill. Boshell expanded the mill in 1901 with the addition of a dam built using locally quarried stone. It was completed in 1902. A gristmill was built on the opposite bank of the creek in 1903. Water turbines at each end of the dam supplied power to each mill. The Boshell family operated the mills until 1963. It was listed on the National Register on May 30, 1975.
