Towner Railway
The Colorado Pacific Railroad is a shortline railroad operating on 122 miles of former Missouri Pacific Railroad trackage in southeast Colorado. It interchanges with Union Pacific and BNSF at North Avondale Junction near Boone, and with the Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad at Towner. It is sometimes referred to as the Towner Line or the Towner Railway. History The line was constructed in the late 1880s by the Missouri Pacific Railroad as part of its mainline between Pueblo and Kansas City. As a condition of the 1982 Missouri Pacific - Union Pacific merger, the Denver & Rio Grande Western got trackage rights over this line. The D&RGW merged with the Southern Pacific in 1992. In 1996, Union Pacific Merged with Southern Pacific, and the line became redundant in UP's system. The Surface Transportation Board approved the abandonment as part of the merger. The Sheridan Lake post office ( Zip Code 81071) serves Towner postal addresses. History Towner was originally known as "Memphis". It was a frequent attraction for Kansans when their state was " dry". Towner is the easternmost town in Colorado, located less than from the Kansas border. The town currently supports two grain elevators. Its population swells during harvest due to the influx of agricultural crews who often camp in the town. Towner students attend Plainview School, close to Sheridan Lake. It is responsible for the education of students in grades prekindergarten through grade 12. The V&S Railway is a shortline railroad that operates two disconnected lines in the U.S. state of Kansas. It is affiliated with A&K Railroad Materials. The company acquired its first line, a former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway line between Medicine Lodge and a BNSF Railway junction at Attica, from the Central Kansas Railway in 2000. It is primarily located in Kansas and extends into Colorado, but despite its name, not into Oklahoma.
