Encyclopedia Of Popular Music
''The Encyclopedia of Popular Music'' is an encyclopedia created in 1989 by Colin Larkin. It is the "modern man's" equivalent of the '' Grove Dictionary of Music'', which Larkin describes in less than flattering terms.''The Times'', ''The Knowledge'', Christmas edition, 22 December 2007- 4 January 2008. It was described by ''The Times'' as "the standard against which all others must be judged". History of the encyclopedia Larkin believed that rock music and popular music were at least as significant historically as classical music, and as such, should be given definitive treatment and properly documented. ''The Encyclopedia of Popular Music'' is the result. In 1989, Larkin sold his half of the publishing company Scorpion Books to finance his ambition to publish an encyclopedia of popular music. Aided by a team of initially 70 contributors, he set about compiling the data in a pre-internet age, "relying instead on information gleaned from music magazines, individual expertise ...

Turn Loose The Swans
''Turn Loose the Swans'' is the second album by the British doom metal band My Dying Bride, released in 1993. It marked a radical departure from the band's first full-length, ''As the Flower Withers''. Martin Powell's violin playing had become fully integrated into the band's sound, whilst vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe mixed death metal growls and grunts with the spoken word and an often plaintive singing voice. The first ("Sear Me MCMXCIII") and final ("Black God") tracks dispensed with guitars, bass and drums altogether, while the album was also far slower and longer than its predecessor. For these reasons, ''Turn Loose the Swans'' is often considered to be important in the development of the death-doom sound My Dying Bride helped pioneer and also foreshadows the gothic metal elements that would dominate their subsequent albums. Though far from straightforward, Aaron Stainthorpe's lyrics were much less complex than those employed on ''As the Flower Withers''. He explicitly addres ...

The Thrash Of Naked Limbs
''The Thrash of Naked Limbs'' is the second EP by death/doom metal band My Dying Bride. This EP was also released as a vinyl record. By this time, the band was a 6-piece, having added session violinist and keyboardist Martin Powell as an official band member. The EP was also released as part of the limited box-set, "The Stories", alongside the band's other singles, ''Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium'' and ''I Am the Bloody Earth''. All three were released on one disc on the compilation ''Trinity'' in 1995. The song's video, available on ''For Darkest Eyes'' features much slow motion footage of a girl writhing in her sleep, interspersed with barely visible footage of the band walking with torches. The video version of the song is an edited version, two minutes or so shorter than the EP version. A live version of the title track is also available on ''For Darkest Eyes''. The lyrics to "Le Cerf Malade" are a fragment from the fable 'Le Cerf Malade' by the 17th century Fr ...

As The Flower Withers
''As the Flower Withers'' is the debut studio album by Yorkshire-based doom metal band My Dying Bride. The artwork was designed by Dave McKean. This is the only full-length My Dying Bride album on which lead vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe utilizes his death growl as the sole vocal style. Song information Many of the tracks on this album have appeared in a different form on other My Dying Bride releases. "Sear Me" was the first in a trilogy of songs to bear the title, followed by the keyboard- and violin-only "Sear Me MCMXCIII" in 1993 and "Sear Me III" in 1999, which is more similar in style to the original, being a full band composition. "The Bitterness and the Bereavement" evolved from an earlier demo, which was released independently as " Unreleased Bitterness" in 1993. This version of the song also appears on the digipak re-release of ''As the Flower Withers'', and on the rarities/best-of compilation ''Meisterwerk 1''. "Vast Choirs" is a reworked version of the version that app ...
