Toussaud
Toussaud (May 6, 1989 – January 5, 2009) was a bay mare bred and raced by Juddmonte Farms. Sired by El Gran Senor out of an In Reality mare, Image of Reality, Toussaud achieved much on the track and in the breeding shed. Race career Toussaud raced in both Europe and the US, excelling on grass surfaces. At three she won against males in the Van Geest Criterion Stakes (Gr.3) in England and placed in both the Calor Silver Trophy and Fed Brew Lager Beeswing Stakes. At four, she was shipped across the pond and again won against the colts in the American Handicap (Gr.2). She then won the Gr.1 Gamely Breeders’ Cup Handicap (now just the Gamely Stakes). She also added the Wilshire Handicap (Gr.2) and the Autumn Days Handicap to her list of victories. El Gran Senor
El Gran Senor (21 April 1981 – 18 October 2006) was a champion American-bred Thoroughbred race horse, foaled at Windfields Farm (Maryland). He was the best horse of his generation in Europe at both two and three years of age, ahead of an outstanding group of contemporaries which included Chief Singer, Darshaan, Rainbow Quest, Sadler's Wells, Lashkari, Pebbles, Commanche Run and Northern Trick. His only defeat in eight races came when he was beaten a short head by Secreto in the 1984 Epsom Derby. El Gran Senor received a ''Timeform'' rating of 136. Criterion Stakes
The Criterion Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run on the July Course at Newmarket over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late June or early July. The present Criterion Stakes was established in 1978, and for a period it was classed at Listed level. During the eighties the race was known as the Van Geest Stakes. It was promoted to Group 3 status in 1986. A previous race with the same name was an important event for two-year-olds. Kentucky Broodmare Of The Year
The Kentucky Broodmare of the Year is selected each year by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. The title is considered the highest honor an American thoroughbred broodmare can receive, as the majority of American breeding stock resides in Kentucky. It is a subjective vote, as opposed to the title for leading sire in North America that looks strictly at the earnings of the stallion's progeny in the given year. Currently, a mare is eligible for consideration if one particular offspring, conceived and foaled in Kentucky, won a Grade I stakes race in the award year. Consideration may then also be given to previous foals, specifically the number of stakes winners produced and their earnings. The rules were more relaxed in the past, essentially requiring, as one bloodstock expert observed, only that "the mare be boarded in Kentucky." Chester House
Chester House (February 1, 1995 – June 28, 2003) was an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In his racing career, he ran in both Europe and North America, winning six races, most notably the Arlington Million as a five-year-old in 2000. Following his retirement, he showed promise as a stallion before dying at the age of eight. Background Chester House was a dark bay horse bred by his owner, Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms breeding operation. He was sired by Mr. Prospector and out of the El Gran Senor mare Toussaud and was his dam's first foal. Toussaud later produced Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker. American Handicap
The American Stakes is a Grade III American thoroughbred horse race for horses age three and older over a distance of one mile on the turf track held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California in June. The race currently offers a purse of $100,000. History The event was inaugurated on Independence Day in 1938 as the American Handicap, when Bing Crosby's and Lindsay C. Howard's Argentine bred Ligorati set a new track record of 1:50 for the miles feature on the dirt track before a crowd of 60,000 at Hollywood Park Racetrack. The event was regularly scheduled for many of its runnings on the Fourth of July holiday attracting massive crowds especially in the 1950s and 1960s. Gamely Stakes
The Gamely Stakes is a Grade I American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares age three and older over a distance of miles on the turf run in late May annually at Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, California. History The race was inaugurated in 1939 as the Long Beach Handicap at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California over a distance of 1 mile. Then event was dormant until 1968 when it was run on the dirt for three-year-olds and older over a distance of miles. The following year the race was conditioned for fillies and mares at the distance of 1 mile. In 1973, the distance was set at the current route of miles with a classification of Grade II. The race was renamed for the 1976 running to honor the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame filly Gamely who had died in 1975. It was run in two divisions in 1971 and again in 1978. Wilshire Handicap
The Wilshire Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares age three and older. The race runs over a distance of one mile (8 furlongs) on turf track and is scheduled annually in May at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. History The event was inaugurated on 30 June 1953 as the Wilshire Mile a one-mile race on dirt for three-year-old fillies that was won by the British bred filly Ria Rica in an upset victory in the time of 1:37 before a Tuesday crowd of 23,158. The Senator Ken Maddy Stakes is a Listed American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares, two years old and older over a distance of five furlongs on the turf course scheduled in early November at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. History The event was inaugurated on 8 October 1969, opening day of the Oak Tree Racing Association meeting at Santa Anita Park as the Autumn Days Stakes, an allowance stakes for age three and older of either sex over the Downhill turf course at a distance of about furlongs. In Reality (March 1, 1964 – May 8, 1989) was an American bred racehorse. Bred in Florida, he was a son of Intentionally and out of the mare My Dear Girl, the 1959 American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. His damsire was Santa Anita Derby winner Rough'n Tumble, who sired U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Dr. Fager. In Reality is best remembered for his win in the Florida Derby and his runner-up performance in the Preakness Stakes to Eclipse Award Champion and millionaire Damascus. Race career In Reality started his stakes career with a second-place finish in the Cowdin Stakes to the young Dr. Fager and then ran second in the Sapling Stakes. Bay (color)
Bay is a hair coat color of horses, characterized by a reddish-brown or brown body color with a black point coloration on the mane, tail, ear edges, and lower legs. Bay is one of the most common coat colors in many horse breeds. The black areas of a bay horse's hair coat are called "black points", and without them, a horse is not a bay horse. Black points may sometimes be covered by white markings; however such markings do not alter a horse's classification as "bay". Bay horses have dark skin – except under white markings, where the skin is pink. Genetically, bay occurs when a horse carries both the Agouti gene and a black base coat.
