''Tosca'' is a 1956 Italian musical melodrama film directed by Carmine Gallone and starring Franca Duval, Afro Poli and Franco Corelli.Goble p. 988 It is based on the 1900 opera ''Tosca'' by Giacomo Puccini, which was adapted from the 1887 play by Victorien Sardou. It was made at Cinecittà in Rome. Carmine Gallone
Carmine Gallone (10 September 1885 – 11 March 1973) was an early Italian film director, screenwriter, and film producer, who was also controversial for his works of pro-Fascist propaganda and historical revisionism. Considered one of Italian cinema's leading early directors, he directed over 120 films in his fifty-year career between 1913 and 1963. Life and career Carmine Gallone was born as Carmelo Camillo Gallone on 10 September 1885 in Taggia (in the province of Imperia), but grew up in Naples. His father was Italian, from Sorrento, and his mother was French, from Nice.G. Maria Caniglia (5 May 1905 – 16 April 1979) was one of the leading Italian spinto sopranos of the 1930s and 1940s. Life and career Caniglia was born in Naples and studied at the Music Conservatories of Naples with Agostino Roche. She made her professional debut in Turin as Chrysothemis in '' Elektra'' in 1930. The same year she sang Magda in Respighi's ''La campana sommersa'' in Geneva and Elsa in Wagner's ''Lohengrin'' in Rome and made her debut at La Scala in Milan as Maria in Pizzetti's ''Lo straniero''. She sang regularly at La Scala until 1951 in the leading dramatic soprano roles in opera, such as ''Un ballo in maschera'', ''La forza del destino'', ''Aida'', ''Andrea Chénier'', ''Tosca'' and ''Adriana Lecouvreur''.
