Torghatten
Torghatten is a granite dome on the island of Torget, Nordland, Torget in Brønnøy Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is known for its characteristic hole, or natural tunnel, through its center. It is possible to walk up to the tunnel on a well-prepared path, and through it on a natural path. On 6 May 1988, Widerøe Flight 710 from Namsos to Brønnøysund crashed into the side of the mountain, and all 36 passengers and crew died. Tunnel According to legend, the hole was made by the troll ''Hestmannen'' while he was chasing the beautiful girl ''Lekamøya''. As the troll realized he would not get the girl, he released an arrow to kill her, but the troll-king of Sømna threw his hat into the arrow's path to save her. The hat turned into the mountain with a hole in the middle. The tunnel is long, wide, and high. It was formed during the Scandinavian ice age. Widerøe Flight 710
Widerøe Flight 710, commonly known as the Torghatten Accident ( no, Torghatten-ulykken), was a controlled flight into terrain into the mountain of Torghatten in Brønnøy, Norway. The Widerøe-operated de Havilland Canada Dash 7 crashed on 6 May 1988 at 20:29:30 during approach to Brønnøysund Airport, Brønnøy. All thirty-six people on board LN-WFN were killed; the crash remains the deadliest accident involving the Dash 7 and the deadliest in Northern Norway. The direct cause of the accident was that the aircraft had descended from 500 meters to 170 meters (1,500–550 ft) at instead of from the airport. An investigation found several shortcomings in the airline's operating procedures, in particular lack of proper cockpit communication and mutual control of the descent and approach plans. Torget, Nordland
Torget is an island in Brønnøy Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The island lies just off shore from the town of Brønnøysund on the mainland. It is connected to Brønnøysund by the Brønnøysund Bridge. There were 815 residents living on the island in 2015. The unique tall mountain Torghatten is the highest point on the island, located on the southern tip of the island. The mountain has a hole through the middle, so Torghatten is a popular tourist destination. It is estimated that there are on average about 100,000 visitors each year. Near Torghatten, there is a campsite where tourists can rent cabins or rent space for camping. There is also a small swimming area and a small restaurant right on the water. Brønnøysund
Brønnøysund () is a List of towns and cities in Norway, town and the administrative centre of Brønnøy Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is also a List of former municipalities of Norway, former municipality within Nordland county. The village of Brønnøysund originally was declared a ladested in 1923 which made it an independent municipality. After merging with Brønnøy in 1964, it lost its town status. Moon Hill
Moon Hill () is a hill with a natural arch through it a few kilometers outside Yangshuo in southern China's Guangxi autonomous region. Moon Hill is part of the Guilin Mountains. It is so named for a wide, semicircular hole through the hill, all that remains of what was once a limestone cave formed in the phreatic zone. Like most formations in the region, it is karst. It is also a popular tourist attraction. Description It takes roughly 20 minutes to climb up to the arch (about 800 steps), or considerably longer for those who wish to reach the summit. Visitors must pay an entrance fee in order to climb the hill. Souvenir and refreshment vendors often follow climbers up and down the path. Monte Forato is a mountain (1,230 m) in the Alpi Apuane, in Tuscany, central Italy. It is formed by two peaks of similar altitude, connected by a natural arch which has given the group its name (meaning "Holed Mountain" in Italian). Alpi Apuane
The Apuan Alps ( it, Alpi Apuane) are a mountain range in northern Tuscany, Italy.
