Toptable
Toptable (styled toptable) was an online restaurant booker covering the UK as well as major cities in Europe and New York City established in 2000 and bought by OpenTable in 2010. History Toptable was founded in 2000 by entrepreneur Karen Hanton for restaurant owners to advertise their venues and book customers directly. Toptable sat over 1.5 million diners in 2006 when it completed its first full year. Toptable lists more than 5,000 restaurants in the UK, plus Paris, Dublin, and New York City, providing online menus, reviews and 360° images of each restaurant. Diners can read and compare information about restaurants before their table booking online. Today, 2.3 million visitors view the Toptable website each month and, in February 2010, a dedicated Toptable iPhone app was launched. Karen Hanton Order of the British Empire, MBE is a Scottish entrepreneur, known for founding JustAddRed, Toptable and Mortimer & Spinks. Career 2015 Hanton founded JustAddRed, an East London incubator. 2000 - 2010 Hanton founded Toptable, toptable.com, Europe's largest online restaurant booking service, listing over 8000 restaurants in 14 countries. It was bought by the NASDAQ listed Opentable in 2010 for $55M. Sir Alex Ferguson and Gary Rhodes were shareholders in the company, and Hanton was the biggest single shareholder and CEO. OpenTable is an online restaurant-reservation service company founded by Sid Gorham, Eric Moe and Chuck Templeton on 2 July 1998 and is based in San Francisco, California. In 1998, operations began with a limited selection of restaurants in San Francisco. Restaurants used the company's back-end software to process the reservations made on the website, resulting in a real-time reservation system for both diners and restaurants. The service has since expanded to cover more than 50,000 restaurants in more than 80 countries. Reservations are free to end users; the company charges restaurants flat monthly and per-reservation fees for their use of the system. Gary Rhodes (22 April 1960 – 26 November 2019) was an English restaurateur and television chef, known for his love of English cuisine and ingredients and for his distinctive spiked hair style.
