Tony McGuinness (footballer)
Anthony McGuinness (born 6 May 1964 in Adelaide, South Australia) is a former Australian rules football player who played for Footscray and in the VFL/AFL. His wife is former '' Nine News'' Adelaide presenter Georgina McGuinness. SANFL career McGuinness proved his skills early in his career with leading SANFL club Glenelg, winning the Magarey Medal in 1982 at the age of 18. A dynamic and pacy left-footed rover, he featured strongly in Glenelg's 1985 premiership victory against North Adelaide, kicking 2 goals. VFL/AFL Career Like his Glenelg premiership teammate Stephen Kernahan, McGuinness then accepted the invitation to play in the more lucrative Victorian Football League. 1993 State Of Origin Championships
The 1993 State of Origin Championships, known formally as the CUB AFL State of Origin championship, was the last Australian rules football series held involving representative teams of all Australian states. It was the first and last such tournament run by the AFL Commission. It was the first tournament to combine Territory with state teams. While Victoria and Tasmania and South Australia and Western Australia would play as their own States, New South Wales combined with Australian Capital Territory and Queensland were combined with Northern Territory. Chris McDermott
Christopher Stephen McDermott (born 4 November 1963) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL), and the Glenelg Football Club and North Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). He was an inaugural inductee into the South Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2002. Playing career He was initially signed by the VFL team Fitzroy in 1981, but stayed in the SANFL with Glenelg after the South Australian player retention scheme was developed to pay top players to remain in South Australia. He was also chased by Carlton, and eventually drafted by Brisbane in 1986, but still did not make his VFL debut. Football Park, known commercially as AAMI Stadium, was an Australian rules football stadium located in West Lakes, South Australia, West Lakes, a western suburb of Adelaide, the state capital of South Australia, Australia. It was built in 1973 by the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) and opened in 1974. The Adelaide Crows (officially the Adelaide Football Club) are a professional Australian rules football team based in Adelaide, South Australia. Founded in 1990. The Crows has fielded a men's team in the Australian Football League (AFL) since 1991, and a women's team in the AFL Women's (AFLW) competition since 2017. 1990 AFL Season
The 1990 AFL season was the 94th season of the Australian Football League (AFL) and the first under this name, having been known as the Victorian Football League until 1989. It was the highest level senior Australian rules football competition and administrative body in Victoria; and, as it featured clubs from New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia, it was the ''de facto'' highest level senior competition in Australia. The season featured fourteen clubs, ran from 31 March until 6 October, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top five clubs. Victorian Football League (1897–1989)
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. Stephen Kernahan
Stephen Scott Kernahan (born 1 September 1963) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) and for the Glenelg Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). He also played 16 State of Origin games for South Australia and gained selection as an All-Australian five times (1983, 1986, 1988, 1992 and 1994). He later served for six years as president of the Carlton Football Club. North Adelaide Roosters
North Adelaide Football Club, nicknamed The Roosters, is an Australian rules football club affiliated with the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) and SANFL Women's League (SANFLW). Georgina McGuinness (née Allan, formerly Thomas) is a newsreader who was the anchor of Nine News#Adelaide, ''Nine News Adelaide'''s weekend 6pm news bulletin from 1989 to 2011. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball.
