Tomoko Miho
Tomoko Miho (September 2, 1931 - February 10, 2012) was a Japanese-American graphic designer and recipient of the 1993 List of AIGA medalists, AIGA Medal. She is known for her understanding of the relationship between space and object. Biography Tomoko Miho (née Kawakami) was born in Los Angeles in 1931 and spent her early days in the Gila River War Relocation Center in Arizona. She attended the Minneapolis School of Art and the Art Center School in Los Angeles where she earned a degree in industrial design. She and her husband and fellow designer, James Miho, went traveling through Europe where she met Giovanni Pintori (director of Olivetti), Hans Erni, and Herbert Leupin, and visited the renowned Ulm School of Design. After her return to the United States, she worked at George Nelson Associates, Inc. under Creative Director Irving Harper and became his successor. Noguchi Museum
The Noguchi Museum, chartered as The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum, is a museum and sculpture garden in the Long Island City section of Queens, New York City, designed and created by the Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. Opening on a limited basis to the public in 1985, the museum and foundation were intended to preserve and display Noguchi's sculptures, architectural models, stage designs, drawings, and furniture designs. The two-story, museum and sculpture garden, one block from the Socrates Sculpture Park, underwent major renovations in 2004 allowing the museum to stay open year-round. Hall Of Femmes
Hall of Femmes is a project, based in Sweden, aiming to highlight the work of women in art direction and design. The designers Samira Bouabana and Angela Tillman Sperandio founded the project in 2009 with the intention to revise design history by paying tribute to the women who made contributions to the field without due recognition. The Hall of Femmes book series where eight female pioneers in graphic design are portrayed. The project also includes seminars, Film screening, screenings, talks, exhibitions and podcasts. Hall of Femmes also seeks to inspire to a more equal industry and contribute to the future of the design scene. International Typographic Style
The International Typographic Style, also known as the Swiss Style, is a graphic design style that emerged in Russia, the Netherlands, and Germany in the 1920s and was further developed by designers in Switzerland during the 1950s. The International Typographic Style has had profound influence on graphic design as a part of the modernist movement, impacting many design-related fields including architecture and art. It emphasizes cleanness, readability, and objectivity. Hallmarks of the style are asymmetric layouts, use of a grid, sans-serif typefaces like Akzidenz Grotesk, and flush left, ragged right text.
