Kent State Golden Flashes Men's Ice Hockey
The Kent State Golden Flashes Men's Ice Hockey was an NCAA Division I ice hockey team from 1980-1994. Kent State hockey was promoted to Division I status by the Board of Trustees on June 12, 1980, following ten years as a club sport. The program joined fellow independent Notre Dame to form the American Collegiate Hockey Association from 1986-89 (not to be confused with the ACHA formed in 1991). After a 19-win campaign in his third season with the club John Wallin left to take over the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League in 1987. After Kent State alum Tom Viggiano headed the program for the 1987–88 season, Bill Switaj was brought in once it was confirmed that the program would continue to exist beyond 1988 despite budgetary concerns. John Wallin
John Wallin is an American former ice hockey head coach who previously headed the program at Kent State. Career Wallin arrived in Kent in the summer of 1984 and took over as head coach of the university's club team as well as becoming the director of the Kent State University Ice Arena. After a successful season the Golden Flashes jumped up to the Division I ranks, and won 21 games their first season of competition (though all were exhibition contests). In his third year behind the bench Wallin saw Kent State join an informal conference (along with Notre Dame) and win an additional 19 games. With 51 wins under his belt in three seasons Wallin resigned suddenly in June 1987 and took over behind the bench for the Sudbury Wolves, a junior team in the OHL. Bill Switaj is an American ice hockey former player and head coach and current director of the Kent State University Ice Arena. Career Switaj began attending Boston College in the fall of 1979 and eventually worked his way onto the team as a walk-on. After graduating in 1983 he made his way into the coaching ranks, finding a position at Rensselaer as a goalie coach before landing in West Point as an assistant under Rob Riley. The 1987–88 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season began in October 1987 and concluded with the 1988 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament's championship game on April 2, 1988 at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, New York.
