Tom Sun Ranch
Tom Sun Ranch, also known as Sun Ranch, is a historic site along the old Oregon and Mormon trails, about 6 mi (9.7 km) west of Independence Rock, Wyoming on Wyoming Highway 220. History The ranch's builder, Thomas Du Beau Soleil (Tom Sun), was a French-Canadian frontiersman who later became a pioneer cattleman. During the 1870s and 1880s, the ranch was typical of many medium-sized ranching operations in cattle country. In 1882, ''The Cheyenne Daily Leader'', remarked that "the eastern person of inquiring turn of mind who writes to his friends out west to ask what a ranch is like would find his answer in a description of Tom Sun's." Devil's Gate (Wyoming)
Devil's Gate or Devils Gate''Independence Rock, Wyoming,'' 7.5 Minute Topographic Quadrangle, USGS, 1981 is a natural rock formation, a gorge on the Sweetwater River in Wyoming, United States, southwest of Independence Rock. Although the actual route of travel did not pass through the narrow cleft, the site was a major landmark on the Oregon and Mormon trails, and is particularly significant in the history of the latter. Once the Union Pacific Railroad was extended to Benton, six miles east of present-day Sinclair, Wyoming, the Mormon Trail was rerouted through Whiskey Gap in Carbon County, to a point 10 miles west of Devil's Gate to rejoin the original trail. Devil's Gate is a remarkable example of superposed or an antecedent drainage stream. Martin's Cove
Martin's Cove is a historic site in Wyoming. The 933 acre (3.8 km²) cove is located 55 miles (89 km) southwest of Casper, Wyoming, in Natrona County. It is located on the Mormon Trail and is also part of the North Platte- Sweetwater segment of the Oregon Trail. The Cove was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on March 8, 1977. History Before the cross-country railroad was operational, about 70,000 Mormons traveled the Mormon Trail with almost 6,000 dying along the way.
