Tom McGrath (producer)
Thomas Patrick "Tom" McGrath (22 April 1930 - 10 April 1985) was a television producer at RTÉ Television, Ireland's national broadcaster. He is known for "pioneering" '' The Late Late Show'' in 1962, and selecting Gay Byrne to host the show. He was also credited with introducing Terry Wogan and Mike Murphy's first television series. He chose the song "All Kinds of Everything", and selected Dana to sing it, as Ireland's winning entry to the 1970 Eurovision contest. He later produced and directed Ireland's staging of the 1971 Eurovision contest. Early life Tom McGrath was born in Dublin on 22 April 1930 and educated at Christian Brothers School, North Brunswick Street, and at St. Canice's, North Circular Road. He later attended the School of Commerce in Rathmines. In his early twenties he emigrated to Canada, and worked in radio and television gaining experience as a producer. Jacob's Award
The Jacob's Awards were instituted in December 1962 as the first Irish television awards. Later, they were expanded to include radio. The awards were named after their sponsor, W. & R. Jacob & Co. Ltd., a biscuit manufacturer, and recipients were selected by Ireland's national newspaper television and radio critics. Jacob's Award winners were chosen annually until 1993, when the final awards presentation took place. Winners of a Jacob's Award include Fionnula Flanagan (1965), Gay Byrne (1979), and Brendan Gleeson (1992). The record for the most awards won is held by Gay Byrne, who was honoured six times between 1963 and 1981. Frank Patterson
Frank Patterson (5 October 1938 – 10 June 2000) was an internationally renowned Irish tenor following in the tradition of singers such as Count John McCormack and Josef Locke. He was known as "Ireland's Golden Tenor". Early life Patterson was born in Clonmel, County Tipperary. As a boy he performed with his local parish choir and was involved in maintaining the annual tradition of singing with the "Wrenboys". He received special encouragement from local connoisseur Tommy O'Brien after a highschool performance as Lazarello in W. V. Wallace's ''Maritana''. He sang in the local St. Mary's Choral Society and at a production of ''The Pirates of Penzance'' performed with both his parents. His interests extended beyond music and as a boy he represented Marlfield GAA hurling club, played tennis at Hillview and golf at the Mountain Road course. Earl William Gill (14 October 1932 – 4 May 2014) was an Irish trumpet-player and bandleader who, with the Hoedowners, achieved fourteen Top 20 hits in the Irish charts between 1966 and 1973. Castlebar Song Contest
The Castlebar Song Contest was an annual international song contest that was first staged in 1966 in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. The contest was initially organised by the Castlebar Chamber of Commerce as part of a drive to increase tourism to the town. It was hoped that the competition would produce a song that would make the town famous, just as songs such as '' The Rose of Tralee'', ''Galway Bay'', or '' Mary from Dungloe'' had done for their respective towns. The first contest had 70 entries from the UK and Ireland, and the final was hosted by Gay Byrne. The winning song bore the Irish version of the town's name - Caisleán A' Bharraigh. Terminal 3 (song)
"Terminal 3" was the entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1984, performed in English by Linda Martin. The song was written and composed by previous contest winner Johnny Logan, who had won for Ireland in the 1980 contest and would later go on to win the 1987 contest as a performer before writing another song for Martin to win in with. The result of this song is thus part of Logan's positioning as the most successful contest entrant in history. The song itself is a moderately up-tempo number, with Martin singing about her feelings while waiting for her lover to disembark from a flight from the United States. She sings that her own feelings for him have not changed and that she hopes that the same is true of him, although "he's been away too long now". The central motif of the song is the line "Terminal Three: flight's on time", and Logan has stated he was inspired to write the song while waiting in Heathrow Airport's Terminal 3 for a flight home. "What's Another Year" was Irish singer and composer Johnny Logan's first Eurovision Song Contest winning song, achieving success in the 1980 edition of the contest, as well as 's second Eurovision victory. Composed by Shay Healy (who also wrote "The Ultimate Country and Western Song" performed by Billy Connolly), the song reached number one in the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in May. The Eurovision Song Contest 1981 was the 26th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Dublin, Ireland, following the country's victory at the with the song "What's Another Year" by Johnny Logan.
