Toldbodgade 9
Toldbodgade 9 is a half-timbered building situated in the Nyhavn, Nyhavn Quarter of central Copenhagen, Denmark. For about 50 years, from the 1800s until his death in 1852, the property belonged to Henning Hansen Rønne, a skipper from Bornholm, who for a period was alderman of the Københavns Skipperforening, Skipper's Guild in Copenhagen. The building was later for a while operated as a hotel under the name Hotel Helsingborg. The building was listed in the Listed buildings in Copenhagen Municipality, Danish registry of protected buildings and places in 1918. In 1953, the building was bought by art dealer , who subsequently converted it into an art gallery under the name Claussens Kunsthandel. In 2018, Claussens Kunsthandel relocated to new premises at Studiestræde 14. A restaurant administration is now located in the building. Toldbodgade ( lit. "Custom House Street") is a street in central Copenhagen, Denmark. It extends north from Nyhavn at the Nyhavn Bridge, continuing Holberggade, passes Sankt Annæ Plads after just one block, and continues straight until it reaches West India Warehouse where it makes a sharp left turn which connects it to Amaliegade, its parallel street, at the rear of the Design Museum. The east side of the street is lined by a series of 18th century warehouses whose other sides face the Larsens Plads waterfront, which was a major hub for emigration to America. History Origins The street traces its history back to Axel Ulstrup's New Copenhagen masterplan which recommended a regulation of the coastline north of the city, between Bremerholm and the Custom House which had been built in 1630. Wall Dormer
A wall dormer is a dormer whose facial plane is integral with the facial plane of the wall that it is built into, breaking the line of the eaves of a building. Wall dormers are less commonly seen than typical “roof dormers”. They locate the window flush with the wall plane above or through the cornice line. They are essentially a continuation of the wall above the roof eaves. They are thus more of a vertically projecting wall element than an elaboration of the roof. Occasionally, small early buildings are found to have wall dormers. More commonly, later structures (during the period of revival styles in 19th-century architecture) feature wall dormers as an important part of eclectic assemblies of elements that make up such styles as New World Queen Anne Revival architecture and the French-inspired Châteauesque style. A basement or cellar is one or more floors of a building that are completely or partly below the ground floor. Svend Wiig Hansen
Svend Wiig Hansen (20 December 1922 – 15 March 1997) was a Danish sculptor and painter. Biography Wiig Hansen was born in Møgeltønder. He was initially undecided about his career, working as a circus clown and a singer until a job requiring his help in the completion of climbing angels convinced him he should become a sculptor. After studying at the Danish Academy under Johannes Bjerg and Einar Utzon-Frank (1946–1950), his early sculptures included his monumental burnt clay ''Torso'' (1951) inspired by Aristide Maillol and his cement ''Moder Jord'' (Mother Earth, 1953) influenced in part by precolumbian sculpture. The gigantic group sculpture of ''Mennesket ved havet'' (Men at Sea, (1994) near Esbjerg is inspired by Cycladic art and the figures on Easter Island. Palle Nielsen
Palle Louis Nielsen (8 August 1920 – 5 September 2000) was a Danish illustrator and graphic artist. Considered to be one of the masters of his times, his works include drawings, watercolours, woodcuts and linocuts. Biography Born in Copenhagen, Nielsen was brought up in the harbour area of the old town. Nielsen attended Kunsthåndværkerskolen (School of Arts and Crafts) from 1937 to 1939. Thereafter he studied privately under Aksel Jørgensen before entering the painting school at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (1945–47). In 1946, he married the graphic artist Elsa Nielsen. Nielsen first exhibited at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in 1949. During the course of the 1950s, he gained a reputation as one of Denmark's foremost graphic artists working with a wide variety of art forms including woodcuts, linocuts, etching, lithography, monotyping as well as with pen, paper and watercolours. Henry Heerup
Henry Heerup (4 November 1907 – 30 May 1993) was a Danish painter, graphic artist and sculptor. Heerup was an extremely versatile artist. His works of art included paintings, lithographs, stone sculptures, linoleum cuts and drawings as well as objects which he composed from scrap. Biography Henry Heerup was born in Frederiksberg, Denmark. Heerup was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1926 and graduated in 1932. He studied painting under Axel Jørgensen and Einar Nielsen at the Royal Danish Academy of Art. He also studied sculpture under Einar Utzon-Frank. Albert Mertz
Albert Axel Tonndorff Mertz (31 January 1920 – 30 December 1990) was a Danish painter. He was one of the leading artists in the Linien II artists association, working in a Constructivist style in a limited number of strong colours. Biography Born in Copenhagen, Mertz was only 16 when he first exhibited at the Artists Autumn Exhibition (''Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling'') in 1936. From 1936 to 1938, he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Aksel Jørgensen.
