Toivo Koljonen
Toivo Harald "Kirves" Koljonen (12 December 1912 – 21 October 1943) was a Finnish Axe murder, axe murderer and the last Finn executed for a civilian crime. He was executed by firing squad for a sextuple murder. Koljonen was born 1912 in Lahti, Finland. He had been sentenced to prison and incarcerated at Riihimäki Prison, from which he was moved to Huittinen auxiliary prison. He escaped from prison in 1943 and attempted to hide from the authorities. On 17 March 1943, he found a nearby farmhouse where five family members lived – a mother, two grandparents, and two children. Two additional family members, the father and the eldest son, had been conscription, conscripted into the army and, consequently, were not present at the time. Lahti
Lahti (; sv, Lahtis) is a city and municipality in Finland. It is the capital of the region of Päijänne Tavastia (Päijät-Häme) and its growing region is one of the main economic hubs of Finland. Juhani Aataminpoika (; born 31 July 1826 in Vesivehmaa, Asikkala – September 1854 in Suomenlinna), alias Kerpeikkari (), was a Finnish serial killer. He killed 12 people in southern Finland between October and November in 1849. He has been characterized as the first serial killer in Finland. Biography Juhani Aataminpoika left home at the age of 15, living a nomadic life and conducting small crimes. In October 1849, he was charged for stealing horses and imprisoned. During his imprisonment, he was taken from the Hämeenlinna prison to Hauho, where the court was to be held on his crimes. During the transportation, he escaped, starting a homicidal spree. In Lammi he killed the master and mistress of the Helisevä croft with a man named Kustaa Kratula. From there, he went back to his home in Heinola, where he killed his father and mother and their two children before fleeing to the forest. Karl Emil Malmelin
Karl Emil Malmelin (16 January 1872 – 26 February 1944) was a Finnish farmworker and mass murderer. Malmelin was born 1872 in Espoo as the illegitimate child of Helena Gustava Malmelin, a maid at a Lahnus croft. As an adult, Malmelin became a farmworker at the Simola croft in Klaukkala, a village in the southern part of the Nurmijärvi municipality. The tenant there was Johan Ezekiel Aspelin. Malmelin began dating Edla, the crofter's daughter, but when she would not become his wife, he killed everyone on the croft with an axe on 10 May 1899. Three of the victims were women and two were children. Malmelin was arrested a couple of weeks later. Malmelin was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Turku Court of Appeal. The case was the subject of a broadside ballad, and Nurmijärvi parish became popularly known as ''Murhajärvi'' (which literally means "murder lake").
